The quest to repeat as champs:
ASU 37, No. 14 Tennessee 14: Vols score the first 14 points in the first five minutes off turnovers; Sun Devils score the next 37, including five drives of 65-plus yards. Jeff Spence shakes off his two early TOs with 188 yards passing and 75 rushing.
ASU 52, No. 6 Stanford 21: ASU defense gives up an early drive to tie it at 7-7, then squashes the Cardinals running game until late in the fourth. ASU takes command 28-14 on a 20-play, 90-yard drive that ends with Daniel Scott slicing through the middle on fourth-and-goal from the 1 in the second quarter.
ASU 38, Cal 17: Jeff Spence goes nuts, hitting 29 of 34 for 386 yards and three touchdowns.
National championship
ASU 27, No. 2 USC: Jeff Spence passes for 210 yards and two scores, and the Sun Devils complete their second straight 13-0 season and national title-game win over USC.
Coach Nibble calls it a day at ASU, accepting a rebuilding job at Texas Tech (1-11) after the game.
