2020 Season Review

December 31, 2020

Season Report Posted: October 30, 2016 20:49

12-2 (9-1, 1st in Pac-12 South)
Pac-12 Champion
Rose Bowl Win

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
QB Matt Wesley (Jr.) - Wesley, an Arizona native, was handed the keys after the departure of Heisman trophy winning RB Steve Williams. He showed he was far more than just a game manager, setting school records for passing yards and passing TD's in a season, earning 1st Team All-American honors, winning both the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award and finishing a close second in the Heisman voting.

DEFENSIVE MVP
DT Kevin McCauley (Sr.) - Consistently overlooked by the more highly touted members of the Sun Devils front four, McCauley came into the season with very little fanfare despite being a 2nd Team All-American the year before. After leading the NCAA in sacks with 15, that is no longer the case.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
LT Jarod Watkins (Fr.) - There's very little room for impact freshman on a team this loaded, but the highly touted Watkins was too good to keep off the field. With his natural position (G) already occupied by entrenched veterans, Watkins was slid to LT and only allowed one sack in 10 starts. He was named a Freshman All-American.

PASADENA -- Davey O'Brien winner Matt Wesley was knocked out of the game late in the first half, forcing the Sun Devils to finish with backup Jason Ralph. Fortunately, it didn't matter who was throwing the ball because WR David Johnson was definitely going to catch it. The junior hauled in a career high 14 passes for 316 yards and 4 TD's in leading his team to an easy victory over Army, capturing their second Rose Bowl trophy in the last four seasons.
