ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - As a star receiver at a major college football program, Mario Manningham gets paid handsomely to score touchdowns.

Cars, clothes, hoes ... all a brutha knows.

But Manningham performed some unexpected two-way duty on Oct. 6, 2007 against Eastern Michigan, scoring one touchdown and preventing another in the eighth-ranked Wolverines' 38-3 blowout of the Hurons at Le Grande Hizzle.

The Hurons (3-3) were locked in a 3-3 tie with the Wolverines until Manningham made a leaping 16-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone with 3:10 left in the first half.

The Wolverines (5-1) began to break it open just 10 seconds alter when freshman free safety Michael Williams forced a fumble by Travis Lewis on the ensuing kickoff. The ball was scooped up by freshman receiver Toney Clemons, who took it 27 yards to paydirt.

Just like that, Eastern's foolish thoughts of beating Michigan vanished.

But not so quickly.

There was a glimmer of hope when cornerback Lyle Garrison picked off a pass from a goal-line defense and returned it 66 yards. Under normal circumstances, he would have taken it 100 yards for a touchdown, but he had one of the best receivers in college football hot on his heels. Manningham caught Garrison and brought him down at Michigan's 34-yard line with six seconds left in the first half. It was one of two tackles Manningham made.

After one play, the Hurons sent out Sean Dutcher for a 51-yard field goal attempt that hit the crossbar as time expired in the first half.

"We've taken six touchdowns to the house this season," EMU coach B-Dawg said. "None of those were against a team like Michigan, that has the athletes to run down our guys. Vanderbilt had Earl Bennett chasing Corey Everson last week, but Corey has 90 SPD. Lyle's 88 SPD is fine in the MAC, but not against these guys. We could have made things interesting with a touchdown there."

The final score could have been much more lopsided if not for two great defensive stands by the Hurons.

Michigan had first-and-goal at the 1-yard line on the drive that ended in Garrison's interception on fourth-and-goal from the 2. A Doug Dutch interception in the second half gave the Wolverines first-and-goal at EMU's 7-yard line. On third-and-goal from the 2, Josh Hunt sacked Chad Henne. Bryan Wright, who made a 43-yard field goal to open the scoring, shanked a 22-yarder with 31 seconds left in the third quarter to send Michigan away empty-handed near the goal line once again.

"I am very proud of the way my guys gutted it out on the goal line," B-Dawg said. "Chad Henne seemed overly impressed with his own passing arm. Passing against a zone near the goal line is death against us. When you've got a guy like Mike Hart, I don't understand why they weren't using him that much."

Hart had only 13 yards on eight carries in the first half. He was used more as a receiver, catching four passes for 40 yards before halftime.

Armed with a 24-3 lead in the fourth quarter, Michigan finally gave the ball to its preseason All-American running back. Hart scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, finishing with 101 yards on 21 carries.

The offense revolved around Henne most of the game. The four-year starter went 23-for-35 for 330 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. His favorite target was Adrian Arrington, who caught seven passes for 115 yards. Manningham caught five for 70 yards and a touchdown. Greg Matthews caught an 8-yard touchdown pass.

The Hurons' offense has struggled all season, but was particularly inept against a Michigan defense which got an A+ grade from EA Sports. EMU had only 117 yards of total offense, eight first downs and was 1-for-12 on third down. Tyler Jones threw three interceptions, two of which were grabbed by cornerback Morgan Trent.

In the postgame press conference, one of the coaches said: "The game was a little too close for comfort for a while there. I'm certainly glad that Michigan was able to tack on a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter."

That wasn't Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. It was B-Dawg.

"If we had lost a close game, we would have been hitting the reset button, or whatever a PS3's equivalent is," B-Dawg said. "And if we had actually won ... no way in the world would that ever be saved and posted. Street cred ... I'm all about street cred."

After a 3-1 start, the Hurons have lost two straight road games to former dynasty teams of B-Dawg's, Vanderbilt and Michigan.

"I'm feeling much better about things right now," B-Dawg said. "Aren't losses wonderful?"
