Penn State defeats Florida Atlantic

Penn State came away with a 35-16 win Saturday afternoon in Happy Valley, but somehow fans still left disappointed. Whether it was the after effects of the Temple game last week, or the very lackluster 3rd quarter the Lions had, fans were miserable again.

The game started out hot for Penn State as they had a 21-3 lead midway through the 2nd. Kyle Carter had 2 reception TD's from a very good looking Hackenburg. FAU had 3 field goals from 35,29, and 33 yards.

Things turned bad in the 3rd when Hackenburg wasn't looking so hot anymore. He threw a pick 6 to A. Curtis the linebacker who made the game 16-21. Fans were getting very nervous as flashbacks of last week reappeared. Could the Lions season basically end with a loss in the 3rd game? The schedule was made so they could get easy wins!

Not to worry. Penn State came back out in the 4th quarter looking like a decent team as Hackenburg ran for a TD and passed for a TD, again to Carter. A few good defensive stops sealed the deal and Penn State is now 2-1 with SMU in 2 weeks. Everyone now knows that a game that was originally scheduled as a cakewalk, is not much of that anymore.

One thing is certain after today, and its that Penn State is not as good as we first thought. After barely escaping a win against Wake Forest in overtime, fans were put on their heels. Well the heels are gone after yesterday's game, and fans are wondering where the team goes from here. The 11th ranked Nittany Lions could not get any ground game going, and 2 INT's from Hackenburg, one in the final minute, proved to be too costly.

Last year Penn State defeated Temple 20-17. Some fans are now left wondering whether or not this will impact the recruiting. Penn State is now right back where it was last year, an unranked team. Both Michigan State, who was 7th, and Penn State, who was 11th, have fell out of the AP 25. Penn State is the 3rd highest team receiving votes right now. Michigan State suffered a 29-30 loss against UNLV.

Temple's run game was very affective throughout the whole game, and 120+ yards of rushing allowed them to control the ball and the clock most of the game.

Penn State will desperately try to get back on the right track when they take on Florida Atlantic (0-2) this weekend at home.

Missed FG Aids Lions

The 23rd ranked Nittany Lions escaped #11 Northwestern yesterday thanks to H. Niswander. The Northwestern kicker missed 2 Field goals, and 1 of them was with 20 seconds remaining that would have tied the game. The Wildcats converted on 3 3rd Downs during the drive, but the Lions were able to hold them just inside of Field Goal range. The kicker missed the FG, sending Penn State home happy.

This game was nowhere near as good as the performance they put up last year in the conference championship game. Penn State began with the ball yet again, and they ran the ball like fans have not seen this year. Lynch took a handoff 31 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and they had very good runs the rest of the drive en route to a J. Thomas touchdown run. Lynch would finish with his first ever 100 yard game (102).

For the second week in a row, Hackenburg threw an INT that was taken back for a pick 6. However, on the next drive from NW, Penn State returned the favor when Gaines took back a INT for a TD. Penn State would lead 21-7 at the half.

Northwestern was able to get the offense moving in the second half as they had 2 very good drives in a row to nod things up at 21. PSU kept stalling. On a 3rd down when Hackenburg had been having a sluggish half, he found Geno Lewis wide open 50 yards downfield for a 66 Yard TD. 28-21 Penn State.

Northwestern had a few good pass and runs before Penn State was starting to improve and slow down NW. J. Jackson saw his first action of the game on a 2nd down toss option play, and his number was called. He would not disappoint, taking the ball 48 yards for the score to tie things up.

Penn State was having a very nice drive, but they were stopped short with 3 minutes left on their own 12 yard line. Instead of going for it on 4th and 2, Ray Wynn kicked the FG to seal the win for Penn State.

Penn State will now get another rest week before a match-up with Maryland. PSU hopes to move up more in the polls, but will that Temple loss remain haunting?
