Aztecs Down Miners in Dean's Debut
Kirk's Pick: UTEP
Lee's Pick: UTEP
Coach Dean's spread offense was on display tonight, lighting on the scoreboard to the tune of half a hundred. Quarterback Kevin O'Connell had a brilliant first half, with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions on his way to a 4-touchdown performance. Ramal Porter was his main target with 6 catches, but O'Connell's 19 completions were socialistically spread around to 6 different receivers.
The defense terrorized UTEP QB Jordan Palmer (yougner brother of Bengal youngster Carson Palmer) with 6 sacks and 4 interceptions, one of which returned for a touchdown by Senior strong safety Reggie Grigsby
After jumping out to an early 17-0 lead, SD St. let UTEP back in the game with a long TD pass to Johnnie Lee Higgins followed by a quick pick six. From that point on, San Diego State dominated the air and the ground and steadily pulled away from the Miners.
Offensive POW: Ramal Porter, WR- 6 catches, 144 yards, 2 TD's
Defensive POW: Joe Martin, MLB- 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FF, PD
Injury Report: Brett Martin, back-up at each of the Aztec's linebacker positions and special teams ace, will be out for 4 weeks with a dislocated elbow. The injury was suffered in the 3rd quarter while Martin was making a special teams play.
