Wisconsin Steamrolls Hapless Aztecs, Improve to 3-0

September 16, 2006

Game Report Posted: December 14, 2008 05:30

Kirk's Pick: Wisconsin
Lee's Pick: Wisconsin

Putrid. One word can describe the opening gun-to-final whistle offensive performance from San Diego State. An offense built on passing rallied up on 14 completions and 240 yards despite throwing for nearly all of the second half. Kevin O'Connell threw 2 first quarter interceptions after engineering an impressive opening touchdown drive. Schilens failed to break the 40-yard barrier and the teams leading receiver ended up being starting HB Lydell Hamilton, who tallied 80 yards (67 of which coming on a screen in the 3rd). Hamilton ended up being the only offensive Aztec to have a good game, tallying up 140 all-purpose yards and 2 scores.

A few decent individual performances translated into an utterly horrific defensive performance from the San Diego State defense. Freshman phenom P.J. Hill ran up, over, and around the SD St. defense on his way to 179 yards and two scores. The rest of the team combined to rush for 79 more yards as the Aztecs could not stop the bleeding.

Offensive POW: Lydell Hamilton, HB- 13 car, 60 yards, 2 TD's, 140 all-purpose yards
Defensive POW: On a week like this? Yeah, right.

Injury Report: Nothing to report

Aztecs Down Miners in Dean's Debut

August 31, 2006

Game Report Posted: December 14, 2008 04:18

Kirk's Pick: UTEP
Lee's Pick: UTEP

Coach Dean's spread offense was on display tonight, lighting on the scoreboard to the tune of half a hundred. Quarterback Kevin O'Connell had a brilliant first half, with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions on his way to a 4-touchdown performance. Ramal Porter was his main target with 6 catches, but O'Connell's 19 completions were socialistically spread around to 6 different receivers.

The defense terrorized UTEP QB Jordan Palmer (yougner brother of Bengal youngster Carson Palmer) with 6 sacks and 4 interceptions, one of which returned for a touchdown by Senior strong safety Reggie Grigsby

After jumping out to an early 17-0 lead, SD St. let UTEP back in the game with a long TD pass to Johnnie Lee Higgins followed by a quick pick six. From that point on, San Diego State dominated the air and the ground and steadily pulled away from the Miners.

Offensive POW: Ramal Porter, WR- 6 catches, 144 yards, 2 TD's
Defensive POW: Joe Martin, MLB- 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FF, PD

Injury Report: Brett Martin, back-up at each of the Aztec's linebacker positions and special teams ace, will be out for 4 weeks with a dislocated elbow. The injury was suffered in the 3rd quarter while Martin was making a special teams play.

Utes Roar Back to Erase Early Deficit

Kirk's Pick: Utah
Lee's Pick: Utah

Offensively, the Aztecs experiences the classic tale of two teams between the first half and second half. Junior quarterback Kevin O'Connell completed three touchdown passes on top of 244 first-half yards as San Diego State held a commanding 28-14 halftime lead. This went along with new set of QB Draw plays put in for O'Connell, which gave him 27 first-half rush yards. In the second half, however, this seemingly unstoppable offense put up 0 points. Don't let the 416 passing yards fool you. Those were only there because of the onslaught of final-minute deep balls (which also contributed to the 5 interceptions). However, the O'Connell-to-Schilens combo enjoyed such great success in the final minutes we wonder why we haven't seen more of it all year.

Unlike their offensive counterparts, the defense did not play well the entire game (save for the opening-possession interception of Brian Johnson). Had it not been for the Aztec offense completely dominated first-half T.O.P., the 56 points they let up could have just as easily been 76. The defensive line was simply manhandled by a superior unit for the second consecutive game, and we'd be on the lookout for some lineup changes there (i.e. Tony DeMartinis replacing Nick Osborn).

Offensive POW: Chaz Schilens, WR- 10 catches, 228 yards, 1 TD
Defensive POW: Jonathan Bailes, DT- 6 tackles, 1 sack

Injury Report: Kwincy Edwards left the game briefly in the first quarter after sustaining a bruised knee while making a tackle on a kickoff.... Kevin O'Connell left the game in the 4th quarter due to an apparent elbow injury while in the midst of a drive that could have brought the game within two scores. He later returned with the game out of reach

Aztecs Back on Track, Roll Over Spartans

September 30, 2006

Game Report Posted: December 14, 2008 19:23

Not Televised.

Wow! The San Jose State defense seemed to be the medicine the doctor ordered. Kevin O'Connell looked like Peyton Manning, dissecting the Spartan defense to the tune of 461 yards and 5 touchdowns. Balance was the name of the game (at least for the passing game) for the Aztec receivers, with Ramal Porter and Chaz Schilens each collecting 6 catches, 140+ yards (Porter; 146, Schilens; 148), and a touchdown. One sidenote: coach RJ Dean didn't call a single running play in the first half.

Defensively, the unit played a lot better than they did in their previous three games. The performance left a little to be desired, as 29 points isn't exactly shutdown defending, but it will have to do for now. The two sophomore OLBs, Andrew Schantz and Russell "Rusty" Allen led the team in tackles, combing for 17 of them. Allen also chipped in with a sack. Sill, the team allowed points in each corner and this unit remains the weak spot of the team.

Offensive POW: Kevin O'Connell, QB- 26/37, 461 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT
Defensive POW: Russell Allen, OLB- 8 tackles, 1 sack

Injury Report: Defensive captain and starting CB Donny Baker was suspended for 5 games for violating unspecified academic rules.... Nick Osborn briefly left the game in the second quarter on an extra point block attempt (chest)....
