Stanford Cardinal: Defensive Preview

July 13, 2021

Season Report Posted: August 31, 2014 17:40

Under 8th year DC Todd Blackmon, the Stanford Cardinal have played some outstanding defense over the last few years, and this year is likely to be no different.

Without a doubt, the jewel in the crown of the defense is the linebacking corps. Calling themselves as "The Trifecta", Bowen, Fisher and Jones are as fast as they are strong, and their versatility allows Stanford to work out of a base look defense most of the game. Bowen lead the team in tackles last year, and sets himself up to do the same again, and with Jones' move from MLB to OLB after the departure of Mike Brown to the NFL, he looks set to terrorise the Pac-12 QBs from the edge.

The CB group is young, and relatively inexperienced, and it is clear that they will rely on a good push up front to take the pressure off them.

Providing the push is SR DE Jason Mayfield, who has set to pick up right where he left off last season, with a teams leading 8 sacks.

When you hear about Stanford's offense, you know exactly what you are getting.

In a college football world with Hurry Up, No Huddle and the Spread, Stanford's offense is a throwback to a bygone era.

Pounding the rock is Stanford's modus operandi, and Broad is a big believer in the value of controlling the clock.

Leading the charge is Senior HB Bill Britton. At 6'2" 230lb, he is reminiscent of ex-Cardinal and current Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart, who lead the FBS in yards during his stint in 2008 at The Farm.

QB Jason Franklin will be behind centre, a pure pocket passer, he has struggled at times staying accurate, but is a good game manager that can make all the throws.

The cream of the WR crop is SO David Walters, the highly touted recruit from Louisiana. Plucked out of the heart of LSU territory, this big bodied receiver isn't going to run past you, but is willing to make the difficult catches over the middle, and will sell out to move the chains.

Stanford's old offensive co-ordinator has got himself a new office, and it's a return that has the Stanford fans fired up.

After the departure of David Shaw after 4 highly mediocre seasons, the Cardinal AD reached into their phonebook, and snagged one of the hottest coaching prospects in the nation. Coach Broad, who was the offensive co-ordinator from 14-18, and lead one of the sturdiest offenses Stanford has seen, said the decision to come home was a no brainer.

"I'm a Stanford man, I played my college ball here, I was on the staff here, and now I get to come back and lead this team back to greatness", said Broad at the Pac-12 media day. After his departure from Stanford, Coach Broad was at Duke at OC for 3 seasons, leading them to a National Championship, and mentoring 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Cody.

The situation at Stanford is well suited to Broad's offense and talents: a line built to run the ball, and an ox at tailback in Senior Bill Britton. However, winning is tough in the well-stocked Pac-12, and with 5 teams ranked in the AP Top 25 Preseason poll, Broad has his work cut out for him.
