Season Report Posted: October 05, 2011 21:26
As the 2012 season starts and coach Dougherty takes on his 3rd year under the realm. As Chandler was looking towards the draft after last season. Dougherty sat him down and discussed a last run, and to finish out college. Chandler decided to stay and now entering 2012 with the rushing title of last year with the most yards, finshing with 2,246 yards and 23 rushing TDs. Both are now school records for a single season, Chandler has his mind on breaking more records. Like, rushing TD for a career (39), and rushing yards in a career (4,895). If he does what he did last year these are possible and easy goals. He has 31 rushing Tds and 2,765 yards already entering this season. So only 8 TDs and 2,130 yards away he has his mind set.
Other players entering big roles this season is sophmore(RS) QB Deandre Smith, he is taking over the starting job but not looking good leaving training camp. This could be a serious problem for the Owls down the road.
Senior WR Jamar Johnson finished last season with a bang! Catching the game winning TD on the last play in last year's bowl game versus Purdue. Johnson finished last year with 31 receptions, 589 yards, and 6 TDs. Now he will be the go to guy his senior year in the pass game. Hopefully the 6'1 senior can handle the pressure.
Young sophomore WR Brandon Perez was a very dangerous slot WR for the Owls last year. Perez finished last year with 30 receptions, 553 yards, and also 6 TDs. If Johnson is getting jammed you can sure look for Perez to be bringing some balls down.
Junior TE Dustin Vogel was more of a blocking TE the last two year but now he is starting, you will most likely see Vogel more involved in the passing game this year. Career stats- 13 receptions, 157 yards, and 1 TD.
Major holes on the offensive line this year, freshman(RS) LT Matt Williams and freshman(RS) C Jimmy Hall, will be starting the 2012. Two freshman starting line is deffantly going effect the left side of the line this year. While the right side of center had both returning guard and tackle. If they is going to a favorite side for the play calling of Chris Dougherty, its going to be the right side.
As for the defensive side of the ball, you can look to the senior captain Sean Dunlap entering his third year as the starting FS. Dunlap leads the team in INTs (6) and total tackles (159). He is going to be a key player this year as we could see the offense struggle. In them situations, Dunlap is going to have to lead by example and also push his players to also make some big plays.
Some more big keys to this defense will be All-Ncaa 1st team junior(RS) MLB Lance Hobbs who has been a seroious problems for defensives every week, and All-Ncaa and 2011 Lombardi trophy winner senior(RS) LE Ashton Scott. Hobbs and Scott should aid Temple through out the season as Temple switches back from a 3-4 back into a 4-3.
