Los Angeles, (AP)

The Trojans opened the 2008-09 season with a bang against the Virginia Cavaliers in rainey and mudddy game. Although the Cavs were able stay with Trojans for the 1st half, the Trojans still looked impressive a team.

The Trojans came out on fire with a 47 YDS TD strike from M. Sanchez to A. McCoy. McCoy caught a ten yard pass, broke 2 tackles and took it to the house on Trojans 2nd play from scrimmage. The following possession Taylor Mays ripped the ball away from Virginia tailback C. Peerman and teammate F. Moala scooped it up. The big guy (Moala) ran like he never did before and dashed 42 YDS to Virginia's endzone. Cavs were able to answer back on the ensuing kickoff when wideout K. Ogletree ran back a 100 YDS kickoff return, juking USC's Clay Matthews out of his shoe. It was a back and forth battle with tailback J. Mcknight and C. Peerman before the 1st half ended, both scoring a TD of their own. Halftime score USC 28, Virginia 21.

2nd half began in typical Pete Carroll fashion. Trojans scored 17 consecutive pts, with McCoy scoring on another TD catch from Sanchez and C.J. Gable scoring on a 6 YDS run to finish off a long drive. By that point the score was USC 45, Virginia 21. USC was on cruise control and Cavs were playing catch up. Cavs were able to get 12 garbage pts near the end of the game. Pete Carroll, "I liked the way our offense move the ball, we did better then I expected. We had our usual 1st game mishaps, but we'll correct those problems in the next two weeks and prepare for the Buckeyes."

Next Game

Trojans head back home to face the #3 Ohio State Buckeyes, in one of the most anticipated match up of the season. Winner of this one might be the front runner to the National Championship game.

Recruiting Notes

Trojans lands (#5) 5 Star tailback Dane Gordan from Makakilo City, HI. Gordan led his school to a State Championship his Jr year by rushing for 1862 yds and scoring 30 TDs.

Number 1 (5 star) SS Joseph Johnson from Watsonville, CA committed to USC this past weekend. Johnson told us that it's been a dream of his since he was 8 yrs old to attend SC. He plans on following the tradition of Ronnie Lott, Troy Palomalu, Darnell Bing, and Taylor Mays to become the next great SC safety.<p
