Three years ago, Eastern Oregon University and Central Oregon Community College merged to become Central Oregon University. The third largest university, COU officials quickly recognized the potential of the university's athletic department to generate revenue. The developed a plan that would elevate the school from NAIA to eventually join the FBS. The football roster from EOU would carry over and they would begin play as a DII independent. After a 3-9 season, they would again move up, this time to FCS level where they would post a 9-3 season with big wins over Portland State and Idaho, who had just dropped back to FCS level into the Big Sky.
Now COU has made the jump to the FBS and their schedule will ensure a quick introduction to the speed and talent of the next level as they enter Autzen stadium to take on the 24th ranked, Oregon Ducks in their first-ever game as an FBS team.
