Scorpians dominate 1-AA Bears in Opener

Captains Jason Everson and Willie Scott win the toss and elect to receive the opening kick off which is returned to the 32 yard line. The scorpians open up in their flexbone set and Quarterback Hunter Martin keeps it for himself on the triple option for a 66 yard score on the first play. It is immediately evident that this game will not go down to the wire.

The Bears of Maine go three-and-out and Freshman Halfback Cameron Thomas runs back the ensuing punt return back 60 yards for a touchdown. The PAT makes the score 14-0. The fans are thrilled with their teams performance in their dynasty opener at home.

Fans become more excited after 2 consecutive run attempts stuffed in the backfield, but their roudiness is quickly quited after a 21 yard pickup around the left side by the Maine Tailback. Then on a 3rd and 7, impact player Andre Burley finds a hole and sacks the Maine quarterback to force a punt down to the Scorpian 21 yard line.

The Scorpians again open up in their familiar flexbone set, and give the ball up the middle to impact fullback Jason Everson on the triple option who carries it for 5 yards. Then a pair of simple fullback dive up the middle proves that Everson deserves his impact player status as he rumbles ahead for gains of 15 and 20. Then a pair of runs by Wingbacks Thomas and Murphy carry the Scorpians to another first down, ending the first quarter.

To open up the second quarter the Scorpians run... a delay of game? The fans aren't excatly thrilled about that, how can a coach have a break that long and then not have a play called. It's inexcusable. With 1st and 15 the Scorpains run an option pass, the first pass attempt of the day, but it falls incomplete. Another pass on second down, this time a play action pass to Senior tight end Johnny Minor who makes the grab at the 5 and breaks a tackle heading into the endzone. Justin Pino misses the PAT but the Scorpians still maintain a commanding lead. With over 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, the score is 20-0.

After a pass to the fullback resulting in a loss of yards and a sack, the Bears punt the ball and it is returned to the Maine 48. The Scorpians run a counter to staring fullback Cameran Thomas who carries the ball all the way down to the 1 yard line before being brought down. Perfect position to sub in impact fullback Jason Everson to smash the ball in. He walks in untouched for the score and with the PAT the score is now 27-0.

Two consecutive sacks by Right Outside Linebacker Jon Ellis ensure a Maine punt, which ends up at the Scorpian 40 yard line. The opening pass attempt is wide after Hunter Martin has to scramble out of the pocket and throw off of his back foot. The second pass attempt bounces off the hands of the Maine safety. The third attempt is tipped by a Maine linebacker and falls to the ground producing the first chance for Scorpain punter Nate Horne to punt the ball. He blasts the ball 60 yards into the endzone for a touchback.

The game seems to be over as Maine goes out of the full house package on 3rd and 13. They punt down to the 38 yard line of Texas-Brownsville, and after a 7 yard pickup by starting halfback Cameron Thomas, they line up with 5 wide recievers. Probably not the best idea for a running team, as Martin gets sacked attempting to scramble. Back to the flexbone, and the triple option. Leverson carries up the middle for 7 yards bringing up 4th down with 13 seconds left and one timeout remaining for both teams. The Scorpain 4th down conversion attempt fails and the dime package comes onto the field to prevent a Maine hail mary with 8 seconds left. The hail mary was to no avail and the half ends with the score still 27-0.

In come the second stringers for the second half of this ballgame, but don't expect the outcome to change at all. Even these backups are better than the 1-AA starters on Maine's roster. A quick three-and-out and the Maine second team offense takes over after the punt was returned to the Maine 20 yard line. Second string quarterback Kyle Taylor is sacked immediately on his first pass attempt and his second attempt falls incomplete. Then on 3rd down, a screen pass also falls incomplete and Pino comes on to attempt a 47 yarder. The ball goes up and bounces off the right upright, so the Bears will take over at their own 30 yard line.

The Scorpain coaches show the Maine offensive line no mercy, sending 6 or more guys 3 plays in a row resulting in 3 consecutive sacks. This results in a 43 yard punt return by George Murphy for a touchdown. The PAT makes the score 34-0. The fans begin to clear out of the stadium, knowing that this game will only turn ugly.

The next Maine possesion produces 2 runs for a total of 4 yards by the Maine Tailback, and then a 72 yard bomb from QB #19 to WR #6 for a touchdown. After the PAT the score is 34-7.

The ensuing kickoff is taken back 80 yards by Erik Howard down to the Maine 7 yard line setting up a 7 yard Td pass over the middle from quarterback Kyle Taylor to tight end Johnny Minor for Minor's second touchdown reception of the day. The PAT makes the score 41-7 scorpians lead.

After a Maine three-and-out and a 20 something yard completion by Kyle Taylor, the scorpians run out the rest of the third quarter with a draw play to running back George Murphy. Another few completions as the Scorpians continue their drive down the field finished off by a 1 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Taylor to freshman fullback Mike Wright. With the PAT the score is 48-7.

Maine won't go away however, as they run back the next kickoff back for a touchdown, and put the extra point through to make the score 48-14. Their onside kick attempt fails however, and the Scorpians set about running out the clock. 3 runs and a first down and the clock continues to tick down to 2:30. 2 more runs, another first down, and 1:45 remains. The clock continues to click as the scorpians kick a field goal with time running out to make the final score 51-14 in front of a near completely departed crowd.

Next week the scorpians will take on Utah State.
