EMU grabs 7 picks in win over Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Is Purdue's Joey Elliott the worst quarterback B-Dawg has ever faced?

Numbaz don't lie.

Elliott was 17-for-42 for 195 yards, no touchdowns and (yikes!) seven interceptions in Purdue's 31-10 loss to B-Dawg's Eastern Michigan Hurons on Sept. 26, 2009.

It is arguably the worst quarterback performance ever against a team coached by B-Dawg.

Ray Terry of Mississippi State, who transferred from B-Dawg's Vanderbilt team in NCAA 2007, was 19-for-42 for 249 yards, one touchdown and seven interceptions on Oct. 5, 2019. The difference was Terry actually threw a touchdown pass, while completing two more passes and gaining more yardage in the same number of attempts.

B-Dawg had a Michigan team intercept seven passes against Northwestern in NCAA 2004, but he didn't keep track of the quarterback's name. There's a good chance more than one quarterback contributed to the mess, because the CPU has subbed out struggling quarterbacks in past NCAA's. In next-gen NCAA '08, however, the CPU does not sub out struggling players, nor does it mass sub in the late stages of blowouts.

It's called progess.

"I could understand it if Elliott was a young kid or playing in a tough stadium, but he's a red-shirt senior and he was playing in his own crib," B-Dawg said. "That's pretty bad. The CPU should have had mercy on the kid and yanked him. I guess EA handcuffed the CPU coaches this year and limited what they can do."

EMU cornerback Corey Everson came out of hiding to produce the best all-around performance by a Huron in this dyNASTY's brief three-year history. Everson intercepted three passes for 89 yards in returns, set a dyNASTY record with four deflections and made a career-high 10 tackles, one of which was for a loss.

Everson had nine interceptions two years ago before missing the final 10 games of last year with an injury. In the first three games of this season, Everson had no picks, no deflections and 17 tackles. He has 13 interceptions in 19 career games, getting at least one pick in nine of those games. He has three multi-interception games.

"He's 85 OVR now, not 78 OVR like he was two years ago," B-Dawg said. "I'll feel a lot more comfortable from a realism standpoint if he puts up huge numbers this year. In our league, 85 OVR is pretty darn good."

Everson was unable to score a touchdown, despite averaging 29.7 yards per return. That wasn't the case with free safety Chris May, who took a pick 101 yards to the house with 1:14 left in the game. Purdue (0-4) was on the verge of scoring a touchdown that could have made it a seven-point game. It was May's third career defensive touchdown.

Also grabbing interceptions were freshman middle linebacker Fabian McCoy, who has four already this season, cornerback Lorenzo Seaberry and safety Marty Cardwell.

In all, EMU (2-2) had 229 yards in interception returns, compared to only 213 yards in total offense.

The pick parade overshadowed a noteworthy achievement by Dontayo Gage. Gage took the opening kickoff and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown just 14 seconds into the game. It tied the fastest touchdown ever scored by B-Dawg. Bryant McClellan of Vanderbilt had an 88-yard touchdown run 14 seconds into a 33-20 victory over West Virginia on Dec. 5, 2015 in NCAA '07.

The only offensive touchdowns scored by EMU were on 1-yard sneaks by red-shirt freshman quarterback Wallace Stone, who ran 21 times for 90 yards. Stone has eight touchdown runs in four games.

"Purdue's defense was the truth," B-Dawg said. "I can't say the same about their quarterback."

Nor can he say the same about his quarterback, at least as a passer. Stone was 6-for-16 for 97 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. So, for those of you math majors, that's no touchdown passes and nine picks combined for both quarterbacks.
