The FBS Era Begins for GSU

GAME #1 RECAP:
Georgia Southern's transition to the FBS division has started as a success with a 27-17 win over Southern Miss. GSU (1-0) rolled out to 10-0 lead early in the second quarter, but quickly found out what the Eagles from the other side of the field were made of as Southern Miss (0-1) ran off 17 unswered points to take a 17-10 lead late in the third. That is when Jason Foster took over with a 67 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17. The game stayed tied until late in the 4th quarter when GSU took 8 plays to go 39 yards including a 1-yard touchdown run by Jermaine Austin to take a 24-17 lead. The touchdown run by Austin was his first carry since a fumble earlier in the quarter had given Southern Miss the ball with great field position in GSU territory. The GSU defense held strong and it's contanst pressure on Southern Miss quarterback Jeremy Young lead to an acrobatic interception by defensive back Lewis Barr which was returned the Golden Eagle 39 yard-line. GSU forced Southern Miss into a quick three and out and then put the game away with a 47 Jonathan Dudley field goal. GSU takes to the road again next week when it heads into ACC country to take on the defending ACC champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
