Season Report Posted: September 22, 2016 03:28

Record: 9-4 (4-4)
Independence Bowl Win

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
WR Jarod Hayden, Jr. - Hayden broke the school's single season record for both receptions (84) and receiving yards (1346), while also catching 10 TD's...despite playing most of the season with a backup QB. He saved his best for last, catching 10 passes for 144 yards and 3 TD's in the bowl victory over Syracuse. He was subsequently voted 2nd Team All-Conference.

DEFENSIVE MVP
CB Steve Perez, Jr. - Perez was the lone bright spot on a defense that struggled badly to make plays, intercepting a conference high 8 passes and breaking up another 15 en route to being named 1st Team All-Conference.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
QB Paxton Lynch, Fr. - The lightly recruited QB took over from Day 1 and quickly established himself as one of the brightest young prospects in all of football. Despite a foot injury that cost him 8 games, Lynch was still able to post 1906 total yards and score 21 TD's while going 5-0 as a starter.

Lynch, Hayden lead offensive explosion against Syracuse in 58-24 Independence Bowl win

December 28, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 22, 2016 02:55

SHREVEPORT -- With QB Paxton Lynch 100% healthy after a 21 day layoff, the Tigers offense took off like a jet, posting season highs in points (58) and total offense (606 yards) in what was arguably the biggest game of the season. Lynch was spectacular throughout, accounting for 477 yards and 5 scores, with 144 yards and 3 scores going to junior WR Jarod Hayden. That, along with his 10 catches, gives Hayden the school's record for receptions and yards in a single season.

The win gives the Tigers their first bowl victory since 2005 and their first 9 win season since 2003.

STORRS -- Freshman QB Paxton Lynch returned to the field after missing the previous 8 games, overcoming a field covered in snow and three INT's to narrowly defeat Connecticut. Despite the field conditions and mistakes, the Tigers were able to post 555 total yards - their most since a Week 6 win over UCF - with Lynch putting up 413 of them as well as 3 rushing TD's.

The win moves Memphis to 8-4 on the season, 4-4 in the AAC. This marks the most wins Memphis has posted in a season since 2004.

MEMPHIS -- Paxton Lynch missed his 8th consecutive start and the Tigers continued to struggle moving the ball downfield. It didn't matter, though, thanks to a stout defensive performance led by junior CB Steve Perez. Perez snagged his 7th and 8th INT's of the season, the last of which came in the red zone and effectively ended Temple's chances of coming back.

The win is the Tigers 7th of the season (7-4, 3-4 AAC), their most since the 2007 season.

November 23, 2013

LOUISVILLE -- Still without injured QB Paxton Lynch, the Tigers were completely overwhelmed by a much more talented Louisville squad. The Cardinals produced 658 yards of total offense compared to just 293 for Memphis, had 31 first downs to just 14 for Memphis, and possessed the ball for 10:32 more than Memphis. Junior WR Jarod Hayden continued to be a bright spot for the Tigers, posting 7 catches, 136 yards and a TD.

The loss is Memphis' second in a row, dropping them to 6-4 on the season, 2-4 in the AAC.

TAMPA -- With Paxton Lynch still sidelined, the Tigers' offensive struggles resumed. While replacement QB Matt Finley - making his 6th start for Lynch - was able to take care of the ball, he was not able to produce any big plays, throwing for just 175 yards on 37 passes. Memphis was unable to produce a single play of at least 20 yards en route to just 2 red zone trips and 289 yards of total offense.

The loss drops the Tigers to 6-3 on the season, 2-3 in the AAC.

MEMPHIS -- The Tigers once again started sluggish, going down 3-0 after the 1st quarter, but a surge from senior QB Matt Finley (284 yds, 3 TD) and junior WR Jarod Hayden (6 rec, 151 YDS, TD) carried them to victory over their FCS foe.

The win is the Tigers' 6th of the season (6-2, 2-2 AAC), making them bowl-eligible for the first time since 2008.

Slow start, inefficiency plague Memphis in 24-20 loss to Cincinnati

October 30, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 21, 2016 19:12

MEMPHIS -- Junior WR Jarod Hayden was spectacular (129 yds, TD), but it wasn't enough to lift a Tigers offense that seemingly could not string together enough positive plays. QB Matt Finley - making his fourth start for the injured Paxton Lynch - completed under 50% of his passes and the Tigers could only manage 1 TD on 4 red zone trips.

The loss drops Memphis to 5-2 on the season, 2-2 in the AAC.

MEMPHIS -- Things were sloppy once again in the absence of Paxton Lynch, but Memphis was able to take advantage of 4 SMU turnovers - including junior CB Steve Perez's 5th INT of the season - and a 24-7 advantage in the second quarter to move to 5-1 on the season, 2-1 in the AAC.

HOUSTON -- Senior QB Matt Finley struggled in his second start for the injured Paxton Lynch, completing only 17-47 passes and committing the game's only turnover as Memphis could not move the ball well enough to answer an early 14-0 deficit. The loss is the Tigers' first of the season (4-1, 1-1 AAC). It is also the first time the Tigers have failed to score over 30 points this season.

The 4-0 start is the school's first since 1961.

MEMPHIS -- A dominating performance by the Memphis defense was overshadowed when QB Paxton Lynch hobbled off the field early in the 3rd quarter. Leading 24-0, Lynch came up limping after a rushing attempt and would not return to the game.

Even as the offense ground to a halt, the defense continued suffocating the Red Wolves, registering 6 sacks and forcing 5 turnovers on the day. Junior CB Steve Perez was responsible for 4 of those turnovers, intercepting 3 passes and recovering 1 fumble.

The win moves Memphis to 3-0 on the season.
