All Quiet in Week 2

Wolverines roll over Chippewas, 44-21

Chad Henne threw for 273 yards and 3 TDs against an overmatched Central Michigan secondary, and the Michigan Wolverines notched their second victory of the year with a 44-21 win at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines put together several big plays for the second straight week, with five passes of at least 20 yards, three of which went for touchdowns. Redshirt senior WR Steve Breaston led the attack with three catches for 75 yards and two scores. Sophomore WR Mario Manningham, who had 76 yards on his three catches, had the other touchdown on a 54-yard bomb from Henne.

The Michigan defense helped offset a turnover-filled performance from the Wolverines, who lost three fumbles and endured back-to-back second quarter drives that ended with Henne interceptions. Senior MLB David Harris had two of the Wolverines' eight sacks, and Michigan snagged two interceptions of their own against CMU QB Dan LeFevour.

The Wolverine offensive line, by contrast, kept Henne and backup Jason Forcier upright all game. Their ability to stop the Chippewa blitz gave Henne time to find his receivers deep downfield.

"It wasn't the prettiest game we ever played," said Michigan coach Mike Geiger, "but we'll take the win. I'm glad our passing game and defense worked so well, 'cause the running game was a real grind today. It was pretty obvious that they were keying on the run, which really opened things up for Chad."

Junior Mike Hart finished the game with 86 yards on 21 carries, with his longest run going for only 12 yards. Hart did score two touchdowns, one in each half.

CMU's Ontario Sneed was the lone bright spot for the Chippewas, rushing for 132 yards and one TD on 21 carries, and adding 3 receptions for 35 yards.
