The Upset That Wasn't

The Lobos headed to Boise, Idaho as big underdogs to take on the Boise State Broncos. It was New Mexico's first chance to unveil its new flexbone attack. The game went down to the wire. The Lobos were down seven and on the Boise 25 with under two minutes to go when the fourth Lobo turnover, a fumble by backup quarterback Derrick Anthony, seemed to put an end to New Mexico's hopes. Just when it seemed over the defense came up with a huge three-and-out getting the ball back to the offense near midfield with 1:16 left in the game. The offense marched right down into scoring position with little time left. With the ball marked down at the 11 yard line freshman Clayton Robinson hurried his troops to the line to attempt one final play. The ball was snapped one second before the clock ran out but Robinson's pass to WR Nate Green was to wide.
