Season Report Posted: September 01, 2008 00:45

You can confidently now say that North Texas is ON A ROLL. The Eagles have now won 4 games in a row, the fire to this started after a one-point victory over Troy. Now everything is starting to click and North Texas is starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Even after an 0-5 start they may just have enough juice left to win the Sun Belt. "We always believed we could play with some good teams, but we never expected to start like that. It was lousy, there were fights in practice and the team just got frustrated." said 5th year Senior Starting Quarterback Riley Dodge. "As one of the leaders of this team I have to take some blame, I was careless with the ball and was throwing far too many interceptions." Things have changed drastically since then, to the point where you wouldn't recognized this team from barely over a month ago.

After knocking off Troy in the waning seconds, UNT followed that victory with a win over rival Arkansas State by a score of 38-32. North Texas was in control from the 1st quarter through led by Riley Dodge's first pretty much spotless game. He went 23-41, with 313 yards, and 2 TD's. It was one of the first games he didn't throw an interception and that excited the QB Coach that was on the hot seat.

UNT again quickly jumped out to a lead against Sun Belt foe Florida International University. At the break the Mean Green led 24-3 and coasted from there out leaving their home field with a 35-18 victory and push them to 4-1 in the Sun Belt. Climbing so fast made Captain Junior Left Tackle Joe Perez a little dizzy. "What we are doing right now is exceptional, We just have to keep it going and remember that 3 weeks ago we were winless and not even on anyone's radar. We need to keep proving the teams that wrote us off."

Finally a break for the team as they received a bye in Week 9. They took this time to come together as a team some more and just rest their minds for the tasks ahead. So with that said in comes another Sun Belt conference team, Lousiana Monroe. The Warhawks came into the game winning 2 straight games against Arkansas State and Troy. "You could definitely tell they were smelling that homecooking in Monroe after winning on the road 2 weeks straight." said Coach BoSoxFan58. The game was controlled by ULM for most of the game, but left Dodge and company for a chance to tie in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Dodge made good on the opportunity by driving his team methodically downfield before having 7 seconds left from the Warhawks 8-yard line. "I knew Cook was gonna cross right in front of the corner and the safety was deep in the endzone so I just flung it and hoped for the best." Well it worked out with a fantastic catch by WR DaWaylon Cook and a tie game with just :02 seconds remaining. So to Overtime they went with ULM playing defense first the North Texas offense took 4 plays to find the endzone via a Dodge 20-yard pass to WR John Rogers. The Warhawks responded right back with a quick touchdown and extra point to send it to another frame.

The Warhawks struck quickly again and left UNT's Defensive Coordinator reeling. The offense took the field once again to try to work magic and send it to another overtime. Pounding their way down to inside the 10 the Mean Green went. "We were down to the one yard line and I told coach I wanted the sneak." said Riley Dodge. "I said if you want it you got it, get out there son." said Coach BoSoxFan58. So Dodge takes the snap and lunges over the defensive line for the score. Now it was decision time, and Coach decided to take a play out of Boise State's playbook by going for two and the game. Out came the offense for one last play to win or lose the game, as Dodge dropped back and Running Back Lorenzo Dunbar found a crease in the defense he flung it into the endzone. "That ball seemed to hang for an eternity before landing in Dunbar's arms." The Mean Green sideline rushed the field in celebration.

The North Texas Mean Green have finally tallied their first win of the season. Coach BoSoxFan58 can finally take in some air after sputtering to an 0-5 start. Denton can also finally rest easy after the Mean Green put away Sun Belt Conference foe Troy on a field goal by Dan Taylor as time expired. It took North Texas a quarter to get acclimated, but after that they battled and clawed to claim victory. At the beginning of the season the coach circled this game as a key game to how things would pan out in the Sun Belt, and by going to Troy, Alabama and walking out with a victory was quite a task.

Troy quickly got out to a 7-0 start after CB Heath took back a pick 69 yards to the house. They took that momentum to go up 10-0 at the end of the first. That's when North Texas stormed back with a drive concluding with a Lance Dunbar 1-yard touchdown run. After a punt by Troy on the ensuing possession, Riley Dodge mastered a drive that saw him work his way downfield, ending in a 5-yard strike to Sophmore TE Patrick Greene, who finished the contest with 7 receptions for 50 yards and one score. Troy returned the favor with a throw into the endzone from QB K.Parker. At the waning seconds of the end of the first half Riley Dodge made a huge error by throwing a pick when in field goal range. Instead the Mean Green went into the locker room down by a field goal, 17-14.

Troy quickly asserted itself once again by pushing the lead 20-14 early in the 3rd. As North Texas saw a close game falling by the wayside once again, WR Desmond Brigham decided to be a playmaker. Brigham broke a tackle and with excellent blocking downfield took a Dodge throw to the house from 45 yards out. Putting the Mean Green up 21-20 with the 3rd quarter coming to a close. Troy and North Texas exchanged possessions for the beginning of the 4th until a Troy field goal midway through the 4th. North Texas took the ball back, but once again Dodge threw an interception to all but close the game. With 1:34 left in the game Troy lined up for a field goal to extend it's lead to 5 points. The kick sailed wide right giving the North Texas team a glimmer of hope. With 2 timeouts remaining, Dodge and Co. worked their way downfield to give Dan Taylor a shot of winning the game from 32 yards out. The kick was up and good, sending the Mean Green sideline into a joyous celebration of their first win and hopefully a starting point to better things this season.

Next the Mean Green (1-5, 1-1) will face rival Arkansas State (2-3,1-1) for bragging rights. On ESPN's College Gameday, Lee Corso has picked UNT and Herbstreet goes with ASU. Should be another good close game for the fans in Denton. Game will be televised on FSNSW. Check your local listings.
