What a Game!
In the first game in the programs history, the Travis Eagles defeated the Baylor Bears 28-27 behind a stellar 4th quarter comeback. Entering the 4th, the Eagles trailed 27-7 and were all but out of the game, but wouldn't settle.
In the first, Baylor used a very balanced attack and a stout defense to take an easy 14-0 lead. TDs were a short pass and a short Robert Griffin run.
In the second, both teams struggled for a while but Baylor managed to put together another good drive, but the Eagles held them to a 19-yd FG with 2 minutes left. Using their no huddle, the Eagles effectively moved the ball for the first time all game and on the last play of the quarter, QB Dennis Weber scored on a 15 yard run up the middle when the pocket collapsed. Weber broke a tackle in the backfield, then sprinted up the wide open middle to score and draw the game to 17-7 at halftime, a respectable score given how dominant Baylor had been; Baylor easily could have already had 24 points by now, having missed a FG and being held to a FG within the 1-yard line.
Midway through the 3rd, the Eagles suffered a major blow when while drving down to the Baylor 27-yard line, HB Clayton Terrell fumbled and it was ran back for a Baylor touchdown. Baylor added another field goal to go into the 4th up 27-7.
After the FG, Travis moved the ball well and scored early in the 4th on a great individual effort from WR Derek Brantley. Brantley caught a short slant, made a man miss, and got some blocks and turned the short play into a 63-yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Baylor fumbled and the ball was recovered by Travis on the Baylor 23-yard line. After a short drive, Weber found WR Jason Gonzalez in the back of the endzone for a score. This made it 27-21 Baylor, with 5:13 still remaining. After a decent drive by Baylor, the Eagles forced them to punt. On its drive, Travis was able to move the ball while running down the clock. Backup HB Andy Flowers took a toss from 6 yards out and got to the corner before the defense. K Jonathan Raymond hit the PAT to give Travis their first lead, 28-27, with 32 seconds remaining. After an unsuccessful squib, Baylor took over at their own 35 yard line, but with 3 timeouts left. Behind two big pass plays, Baylor was able to get down to the Eagles' 21, far on the right hash. With 7 seconds left, Baylor's K Parks kicked the ball left towards the uprights, but the ball just kept sailing across the face of the goal. WIDE LEFT!! TRAVIS WINS THEIR FIRST GAME ON AN AMAZING 4TH QUARTER COMEBACK, 28-27!!!
