Lumbala Leads Lions in Last Second Heartstopper
If Rolly Lumbala wasn't recognized before as a legit Heisman candidate, then after the UL-Monroe game, he might as well be known as leader.
The junior RB for Trinity Bible stampeded his way through the UL-Monroe Indian defense for 266 yards, including a game-winning 15-yard scamper off left end to lead the Lions to a come from behind 48-45 win. He also had a school-record 67-yard TD run in the third quarter. "Just a stud effort by a stud football player," said Head Coach Richard Hemmen after the win, "but still looms some defensive issues, especially off of the edges."
UL-Monroe stung the oft-minded Lion defense with sharp running from RB Leo Colquitt, who rolled up 186 yards on 28 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. QB Kinsmon Lancaster also added 117 yards on 22 carries for the Indians, now 0-6 on the season.
In addition to Lumbala's outstanding effort, WR Kyle Campbell caught 3 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, OLB John Daugherty registered 16 tackles and 3 sacks, and Mark Medlock added 11. But those gawdy numbers overshadowed the 508 yards in total offense allowed by the Lion defense. "We must find a niche on defense," Hemmen said, "fortunately, we have an off week to find that."
