Freshmen lead way as thrilling UNCW trumps rival ECU

Wilmington, NC

In what proved to be a exciting day for the faithful fans of the fledgling Seahawk football program, the ECU Pirates fell to the underdog rival UNCW Seahawks.

The Seahawks jumped out early, taking a 21-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Pirates didn't go down easily. What followed was a bizarre series of fumbles by Freshman tailback Sean Crenshaw. In spite of his decent ball handling ability, the hand of some malignant god seemed to be causing him to fumble over and over again, on consecutive drives and on kickoffs. Others fumbled when given similar ball carrying duties during this strange divine intervention period of the game, and ECU capitalized on the turnovers to get back into the game, outscoring UNCW 17-3 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

With the game tied going into the 4th quarter, the Pirates scored a field goal on the quarter's first possession, taking their first lead of the game. Not to be outdone, the Seahawks marched their way back to score an equalizer from 47 yards out. The Pirates scored on an 80 yard TD pass which was answered afterwards by freshman quarterback Kevin Schmidt, who boasted a 195.8 passer rating on the day, completing 24 of 39 for 466 yards and 4 touchdowns. He would be called on yet again to score the equalizer after ECU scored again with a TD to freshman linebacker/tight end Kyle Hansbro(who, in addition to catching the equalizer pass, led the team with 6 tackles on defense)

As ECU sought to get in field goal range with less than 20 seconds remaining, yet another freshman, left end Brandon Johnson, came up big. He sacked the ECU quarterback very near their own end zone. UNCW used their final timeout, and the punt return was to the ECU 36. One second remained. Tony Greer sent the ball sailing through the uprights to win the game 44-41 as the fans rushed on to the field to celebrate their best win in their short history.
