2010 Week 1

The 2010 football season kicked off for the Washington Huskies, and they did not disappoint the home crowd with a 49-13 victory over the San Jose State Spartans.

"We expected a lot from our guys, and we really think that they delivered today," Steve Sarkisian said. "I think that this game really gave our fans a preview of what to expect from some players this year, and that this is a team that can win a lot of football game."

Perhaps the most important performance of the day was that of Jake Locker, the Husky quarterback who had his first game since his miserable 2009 season.

Locker threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns, but most importantly no interceptions.

"Jake really did a lot of good things out there today, and he allowed us to win this football game," Sarkisian said.

Locker echoed the same thoughts as his coach.

"It was nice to go out there and a have a good first game," Locker said. "My recievers really stepped up for me and luckily I was able to get the ball in their hands."

Locker's favorite target of the day was of new Husky starter Jordan Polk, the 5'8"speedster who also returned punts for the Huskies last year. Polk caught six balls for 161 yards, and a exciting 80 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

"Jordan can really stretch the field for us, and he gives us a different weapon that we have not had in a long time," Locker said. "He has a disadvantage with his size, but he more than makes up for it with his speed."

Polk also returned a punt for a touchdown, which gave him MVP honors for the day.

Another Polk, Chris Polk, the Huskies starting running back continued his success at the college level with a 128 yard, 3 touchdown game on the ground. A redshirt sophomore, Polk was named to the pre-season All Pac-10 team, and an honorable mention as an All-American.

On defense the most anticipated play was that of freshman Shawn Harper, who didn't disappoint.

The highly rated recruit from last year's class had a monster seven tackle game, with four tackles for loss, and two sacks.

"Shawn played great out there today, putting constant pressure on the quarterback and controlling the running game," Nick Holt said. "He could do a lot of good things for us this year."

Already a fan favorite for his Warren Sapp like demeanor, Harper irked San Jose State players with his trash talking and celebrations.

"It was just a great all around day," Sarkisian said. "I know our guys can't wait for next week and what we can do this season, no question."
