Best Year Yet

December 28, 2013

Season Report Posted: October 14, 2008 02:05

With their complete victory in the Motor City Bowl, O.O Williams' - excuse me - Harold Korenpeck's Pine Bluff Golden Lions finished out a near perfect season. Only the three-point loss to FIU marred the glory. And where to next? Will UAPB get an invite to a better conference? Time will tell. Unfortunately, the Lions lose a sensational senior class the likes of which may be a long time in coming back around.

Edit: Yes! UAPB gets invited to C-USA to replace Southern Miss.

Mustangs No Problem for the Bluff

September 12, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 13, 2008 02:55

SMU has historically been a thorn in the side of UAPB, and this year started out no differently. But Lowell Vandyke's 97 yard kick return touchdown nullified SMU's momentum, and the Bluffie defense deconstructed the SMU offense for the remainder of the game.

FIU-Bar'd

September 12, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 15, 2008 16:44

You could sense this one coming. FIU came in on an 0-4 streak, averaging 9.5 points a game, worst defense in the conference, starting quarterback out for the season. UAPB came in riding a hot streak. The key today was simply blown coverage by the two Pine Bluff corners, each on a streak against cover 3, with no help from the safety.

UAPB over feisty Greenmen

September 22, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 17, 2008 06:06

UAPB overcame the feisty Green Men in a game that featured the destruction of the wide receiver. UNT lost 3 WRs in the game, for 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and the season, all with torn shoulder muscles. The Lions would lose TE Inocente but only for the game. The defenses were popping.

Near Collapse

October 7, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 17, 2008 19:50

Pine Bluff's defense dominated this game, but the UAPB offense seemed determined to throw it away. All three ULM scores came on defensive touchdowns off of turnovers.

Cajuns Caged without Gore

October 17, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 18, 2008 02:05

Pine Bluff's defense held the Lafayette offense in check, and the UAPB offense scored often enough to make this one a breather. The turning point in the game came early, when impact FS Anthony Gore left with a game-ending injury.

High Tension Wires

October 24, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 19, 2008 18:37

Three times FAU went for it on 4th down in this game, not including the final play of the game, and three times the Pine Bluff defense denied the Owls. Each FAU gamble seemed reasonable, but collectively they cost the visitors at least 6 points during a span in which Pine Bluff could not muster an offensive threat and was growing more frustrated on each possession.

Lions Upset Stoopies

September 2, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 12, 2008 06:32

Mike Stoops still patrols the sidelines at Arizona, and he will not be leaving Pine Bluff in a happy state of mind. Stoops watched his Wildcats defense weaken in the final two minutes with the game on the line, and his new quarterback didn't help the UA cause.

For Pine Bluff, it was a coming-out party of sorts for two freshmen. Mike Musick's first reception attempt caromed off his fingertips, but he later atoned with a fine nine yard catch. It was his fellow freshman Darren Unterkirche, however, who stole the day. Unterkirche completed both his pass attempts, and both in the game's final minutes, to help UAPB run out the clock.

An odd sequence of events occurred early in the 4th stanza. With 5 minutes remaining, Shawaiin Penn, on at halfback, fumbled away the ball as UAPB, down 10-7, was attempting to get in scoring range. Pine Bluff challenged the play, and the ruling was reversed. However, on the next play from scrimmage, halfback Cartone Groover fumbled, although replays showed that his knee was down already as well. But the UAPB sideline had already used its lone challenge for the day. Arizona retained the ball. Fortunately, strong play by the UAPB defense forced a punt, and Vandyke returned it 81 yards for the winning score.

Bluff Pulls Away

November 14, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 27, 2008 02:50

UAPB pulled away from a 14-all halftime knot on Jaron Johnson's 79 yard interception return. But it was an ugly game with no rhythm from either offense.

Troy came into the game missing many starters: HB Alex Jones (injury), WR/KR/PR Mike Ford (injury, season), RG Donnie Lyles (academics), and ROLB Cole Fields (injury). Pine Bluff lost two players on KR/KO early in the game: HB reserve Shawaiin Penn, and TE Yammy Crossings. The loss of Crossings killed our Ace bread and butter set, and we could get nothing going through the air. We were -37 yards rushing at the break. So I broke freshman TE Ali Washington's redshirt and brought him in. Soon our Ace running plays got a little traction. Eventually Groover broke out a few times, and that suddenly got us settled down. Still didn't dominate, but did get going.

Development time

November 21, 2013

Game Report Posted: September 28, 2008 19:17

Not dressing out for today's game are starting TE Yamauwala Crossings (strained back) and reserve HB Shawaain Penn (broken jaw).

In recruiting news, the Bluff has received a commitment from a 4* SS prospect, putting to rest one of the team's primary roster worries for 2014. UAPB will lose a lot of defensive starters, many of whom are fifth year seniors, to graduation.

Pine Bluff started redshirt freshman QB Darren Unterkircher today and he split time with fellow freshman Thoong Thormodsgard.

It's pouring rain at the start of the evening.

On Musick's 94 yard scoring play, LG Aggie Jones dropped back, came to the right, and picked up the outside blitz by the Terp LB. Best play I've ever seen an offensive lineman make on 09.

Buffaloed Bulls

November 28, 2013

Game Report Posted: October 04, 2008 01:36

2-9 Buffalo at 9-1 #19 UAPB

Thoong Thormodsgard, in his first NCAA start, had the greatest passing game in Pine Bluff history and the Golden Lions handled the Bulls easily. He certainly had the best half of a game, as he went 17-19, 315 yards, 4 TDs, and no interceptions. Thoong finished 26-36 with receivers dropping 5 catches in the second half.

Bluff Prevails

December 5, 2013

Game Report Posted: October 06, 2008 00:47

#20 Illinois at #19 Pine Bluff

The game of the Week! Our first?

Thor went the whole way. CG lost his 100 yard day on his final two carries (supersim), each of which went for (-3) yards.

After the game, the Sun Belt commish made it official: UAPB is the 2013 Sun Belt Champs. And the OKC Downtown Club awared Marquel Ambler the Jim Thorpe Award.

Invite Motor City Bowl, WMU 8-5 and UAPB 11-1 12/26.

All Cylinders

December 26, 2013

Game Report Posted: October 13, 2008 22:28

Pine Bluff scored on its first two drives, then kicked into high gear. The defense forced 6 turnovers and kept WMU in check all day. Cartone Groover won the battle of the halfbacks, racking up 184 yards and 3 TDs, better than Adam James' 144 yards and 1 TD. And UAPB freshman QB Thor was outstanding in his bowl start, though he left the game with an elbow injury in the second half.

Game Report Posted: September 21, 2008 17:49

Defensive captain Jaron Johnson missed this key Sun Belt game due to an academics problem.
