Georgia Tech Shows Hart in Win at Rocky Top
Facing their biggest deficit of the season, Georgia Tech looked to their big senior quarterback. Mike Hart stood strong, all 239 pounds of him as he rallied his team from an 11 point deficit fourth quarter deficit to win 43-42 in thrilling fashion.
Hart, who finished with 122 yards rushing, started the rally with an impressive 51 yard touchdown run on third and two with six and a half minutes remaining. The Rambin' Wreck went for two and were denied, but the defense forced a three and out. Hart drove Georgia Tech to the Tennessee 13 yard line with four minutes remaining, but the drive stalled, and they were forced to settle for a field goal.
Hart almost didn't get another chance, as Tennessee bled more than two minutes off the clock, but the defense forced a punt with 1:58 left, and Georgia Tech took full advantage. After a 2 yard loss by tailback Sean Johnson on first down, Hart misfired on a pass intended for star receiver Ryan Ellis. On third and long, however, Ellis made the most impressive play of his illustrious career, wrestling a jump ball away from Tennessee cornerback Scott Dawson, and taking it 74 yards to the Tennessee six yard line. From there, three Hart runs set up a short field goal for kicker Doug Carter, who hit the 19 yard chip shot as time expired for the win.
Hart finished the game with 298 yards through the air and 122 on the ground. His 420 total yards amounted to the largest single game total in school history, and Georgia Tech needed every one of them to overcome a career game from Tennessee tailback Seth Carter, who carried the ball 33 times for 153 yards and four touchdowns.
