August 31, 2013

August 31, 2013 was supposed to be a special day for the Tennessee Volunteers, expecting to tally their 800th win in school history as well as their first win in new head coach Butch Jones' tenure at the school. Their in-state little brothers, the Memphis Tigers, strolled into town having lost 22 of the 23 games in the all-time series between the schools. Justin Fuente and his squad decided to write their own history, tallying a surprising 31-17 victory.

The Tigers, led by Junior QB Paxton Lynch, ran the read-option for most of the game, tallying 204 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Lynch kept the ball 22 times himself for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns, and his running backs Doroland Dorceus and Sam Craft combined for 110 yards and a touchdown on their 20 carries.

Tennessee had their chances, with four red zone opportunities, but had miscues and missed opportunities left and right, from fourth down conversion failures to a blocked punt. They weren't dominated by any stretch, but Memphis executed and got yards and points when they needed to the most, while Tennessee failed to convert.

Memphis jumped to a 21-0 halftime lead thanks to dual threat QB Paxton Lynch running the read option attack, but second half defensive miscues and offensive stuttering turned the game into a close one.

Justin Fuente rolled the dice on a 4th and 3 with 45 seconds remaining, running a triple option pitch to WR Mose Frazier, who picked up 10 yards and the ballgame.

Memphis took the lead late in the first quarter with a field goal and never looked back, stomping the USA Jaguars 37-3. The Tigers ran the ball 44 times for 228 yards and four scores and averaged 19.8 yards per catch through the air as well.

USA struggled to move the ball against Memphis' defense, only tallying 8 first downs and 198 total yards while turning the ball over three times. Memphis moves to an impressive 3-0 before the start of C-USA play.

Injuries to QB Paxton Lynch and RB Doroland Dorceus couldn't stop the Memphis Tigers, as they won their first AAC game of the season.

The game looked well in hand for the Tigers as they strolled along to a 20-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but a UConn TD and Memphis 3-and-out made the Tiger faithful wary. Fortunately for Justin Fuente's squad, Memphis was able to force UConn to go 3-and-out, and drove for a TD to seal the victory.
