Harris, Canes drop a bomb on the Jackets

Season Report Posted: August 12, 2009 04:27

After a very sub par performance in the first game of the season, Jacory Harris showed everyone flashes of brilliance in this one. The young sophomore threw for 217 yards off of 11 completions from 14 attempts with 2 touchdowns, while also rushing for 52 yards and touchdown while leading his team to a dominant 31-7 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The key to the game and the reason for the blowout was the Hurricanes' rushing defense, holding Tech's offense to just 105 yards. That number alone sealed the deal, as the Cane's 175 yards on the ground meant that they controlled the clock, and the game's pace.

Tech's defense led to a struggle of sorts early for Graig Cooper who only had 32 yards on 10 carries at the half. In the second half though, he was able to hit holes hard and not look back, and finished the game with 90 yards on 20 carries.

The Canes have to play Virginia Tach next week, which may be their biggest test of the season.

Canes get 3 early Commits

Season Report Posted: August 12, 2009 03:17

Safeties Richie Harris, Johnny Weeks, and defensive tackle Lawrence Ford will all be wearing the orange and green next year. Harris is a 5* prospect, while the other two are listed as 4* prospects by Rivals.com. Shannon had this to say:

"It was great getting those three guys to come down and commit with us. All of them are superb athletes that should help us in the years to come. The only question will be whether or not one of the Safeties moves down to play linebacker. Harris is at 200 pounds right now, but is solid rock. Weeks is kind of a hybrid guy back there. He'l play some corner as well as both Safety spots. Ford should clog up the rushing lanes, and may have a chance to start next year."

Already off to a good start it looks like for the Hurricanes, who last week defeated rival Florida State. If their good luck continues in the season and recruiting, then they should be able to return to their old form.

Seminoles Feel the Hurricane
The 2009 season could not have started any better for the Miami Hurricanes. After only recording 4 interceptions all of last year, on the second play from scrimmage Linebacker Colin McCarthy picked off an out route pass from Christian Ponder, and took it to the house for the first Hurricane Touchdown all season.

The Hurricanes would find another scoring opportunity after a Florida State punt, as Jacory Harris ran a perfect speed option and pitched it outside to Graig Cooper for a 21 yard touchdown.( Note: The game counted this as an incomplete pass.)

On the ensuing kickoff the FSu return man fumbles the ball after a jarring hit from Richerd Gordon. Star recruit Ray Ray Armstrong was there to pick up the ball and set up another touchdown, this one a 2 yard touchdown run by Javaris James.

Florida State would manage a touchdown in each of the second and third quarters, but were no match for the Hurricanes, and they ended the at a 26-14 clip.

Defensive Report

Season Report Posted: August 11, 2009 01:02

Here we have our defensive report for the Miami Hurricanes. This defense was ranked in #7 in the country last season in passing yards per game at 165.6 yards. But was also 75th in Rushing yards allowed, with 151.9 If the rushing defense can step up to the level of the pass defense, they will return the old form as one of the most dominant defenses in the country.

Defensive Line

Perhaps the most important past of the unit is defensive tackle Allen Bailey. The former top recruit has spent more time in the medical room than on the field, but if he can find a way to stay healthy, you could be looking at an All-American. Marcus Forston mans the other DT spot, while Eric Moncur and Marcus Robinson man the end positions.

Position Grade: A-. The starters are all good All-Conference calibur players.

Linebackers

The linebacking corps is looking almost like some of the better groups of the past. Sean Spence was the ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year. Arthur Brown was the highest rated linebacker recruit coming out of high school. And if Colin McCarthy stay healthy, this may be the best group in the conference.

Linebackers: B+. When your two best players at the position are sophomores, you have lots of potential.

Secondary

The Hurricans pass defense was great last year, but they only 2 interceptions by the secondary and 4 by the team as a whole. Now you enter in top recruit Ray Ray Armstrong. The ball-hawking safety has been so impressive, that Coach Shannon has said he may get some time on the offense as well. Randy Phillips returns beside him for his 6th year( granted eligibility by NCAA).

Offensive Reoprt

Season Report Posted: August 11, 2009 00:54

The Miami Hurricanes come into the 2009 college football season with lots of talne tnbad oxplosiveness on offense. This group will look to build upon the 27.1 points per game they put up last year in an attempt to make a better case for the ACC title. Here is a run down position by position.

Quarterbacks

This position is Jacory Harris's to lose. The quick and agile quarterback took over For Robert Marve late last year, and showed flashes of his potential throughout the year. He looks to be the main cog in the Miami offense with both his ability to run, and his ability to distribute the ball. Taylor Cook looks to step in if Harris falters.

Position Grade: B-A. This all according to how well Harris takes over the reigns of the offense.

Runningbacks.

Randy Shannon believes this is the deepest position on offense. Incubents Javaris James and Graig Cooper are both very talented backs that bring great toughness to the group. Cooper looks to get the majority of the carries, while James will get touches near the goaline. Recruit Mike James will be the third back on the depth chart, and may look to make an instant impact.

Position Grade: A. This group is deep and loaded with talent.

Wide Receivers

LaRon Byrd and Aldarius Johnson headline a group of athletic and physical receivers that are all very tough to briong down after the catch. Other players such as Travis Benjamin and Leonard Hankerson will be able to provide support for the top two.

Position Grade: B+. This class has the potential to the best corps in the nation next year.

Tight End

Dedrick Epps returns as the starter at the position. He will look to post better numbers than he did last year in an effort to progress his game and the offense. Richard Gordon will provide a solid number 2 option here.

Position Grade: B. Solid players and depth.

Offensive Line

Three returning starters from a group that was pretty good last year. There is solid depth at all of the positions, and every player was ranked highly out of high school. If the new startes can come in and feel the holes seamlessly, this may be the best line in the conference.

Position Grade: B+. Good depth will keep everybody healthy and fresh.

And there you have it. Those aer grades given out for the Miami offense. Next up will be the Hurricane defense which will look to build upon last year in an effort to become even better.

The history of the Miami Hurricane program stretches far and wide. As you look over the record books, you are instantly met with dozens of not only college stars, but also NFL stars. From Warren Sapp to Ray Lewis, Clinton Portis to Willis McGahee, Kellen Winslow Jr. to the late Sean Taylor.

Yet the past few years have overshadowed this once great and proud program, shutting itself off as one of the premier programs in the country. But Head Coach Randy Shannon looks to turn this once great program back around and into the fore front of college football. With the help of several star players as well as the help of the recruiting base of Florida, he will have the needs neccessary to do so. Now would you like to come along for the ride?
