Amazing last-second touchdown sends Blue Raiders to 0-2

No timeouts left and time dwindling quickly, Skyler Woodard snapped the ball and was immediately engulfed by a larger player. Eleven yards away from victory, the impact quarterback managed to slip the grasp of the defender long enough to wing a pass toward the end zone for wide receiver Brian Hargrove, who went high above two MTSU defensive backs to grab the game-winning touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining on the clock.

So culminated an incredible back-and-forth game which saw the Buffalo Bulls go 1-0 on the season and sent Coach J.D. Clark back to Murfreesboro in search of his first win as coach of his new football team.

The Blue Raiders looked good early, hitting two field goals and scoring a touchdown on a 16-yard pass before the Bulls could get on the board. Singleton found his favorite target, J.P. Gilbert, for a 16-yard touchdown strike to give the team a 13-0 lead.

Buffalo would climb back into the game with a 17-yard pass from Woodard to Larson before the Singleton/Gilbert combination struck again, this time for a 17-yard score of their own which put the Blue Raiders up 20-7.

Buffalo kicked a field goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game, then got a couple of important stops near the end of the first half and mounted a scoring drive resulting in a 4-yard Woodard to Thomas touchdown pass. This put Buffalo behind by just a field goal, 20-17.

J.P. Gilbert continued his huge night by returning the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Blue Raiders a huge momentum boost. Luckily for the Bulls, halftime and a fresh start was around the corner.

The Bulls came out on fire in the third quarter. They executed a 10-play, 81-yard drive to perfection, fullback Corey Harris scoring on a four-yard run with 6:52 remaining in the third. Next came the Bulls' big break. Anthony Singleton dropped back and looked everywhere but at the middle linebacker, who read the play and easily snagged a pass that was thrown right to him. Tony Allen, the Bulls' defensive heartbeat and senior leader, returned the interception 69 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bulls the lead, 31-27.

Middle Tennessee wasn't done. Singleton had a big play up his sleeve as Clark's staff called a play-action pass at just the right moment. Singleton summoned a rare perfect throw and hit Ron Ware in stride, who scampered 59 yards for a touchdown, giving MTSU the lead once again at 34-31. The next drive was a three and out and MTSU went right back down and kicked a field goal to give the team a six-point lead, 37-31.

The Blue Raiders were able to force and recover a fumble on the Bulls' next drive, but missed a field goal against 29 mph winds which escalated just for the occasion, opening the door for the 11-play, 78-yard drive by Buffalo that won the game.
