Season Report Posted: May 07, 2010 21:51
Last season: 13-1 overall, 8-0 Big 12 (champions)
Key returnees: TB Bobby Martin, TE Brandon Mills, WR Mark Houston, MLB J.J. Rooney, CB Jake Cleveland, SS Maurice Robinson, LE Ben Humphrey, DT Bill Norton and OLB D.J. Seal
Key losses: QB Brandon Owens, TB Danny Richardson, G Keith Gaddis, WR Timmy Nixon, RE Jason Jensen, DT Andre Higgins
Why they'll win: The best defensive line in school history (47 combined sacks last season) gets senior tackle Cameron Wood (99 overall) moving up to replace the departed Jensen and three five-star freshman beasts, including Texans Thomas Gates and Arthur Weeks, pushing for playing time. The linebackers and defensive backs are all 90-plus rated, led by all-American Robinson.
Why they'll lose: Owens, who passed for 7,600 yards in his career, will be tough to replace. Sophomore scrambler Ricky Miles gets the first shot at running the offense. Coach Nibble will use more rollouts to accomodate his legs. If Miles can't cut it, the offense, which has four sophs and freshmen on the line, will be in trouble.
Notable: Mills led the team with 70 receptions last season ... Soph WR Brandon Ward could be the breakout star of the offense after a pair of 10-plus-catch games late in the season. ... This is Nibble's fastest defense ever, with the slowest players, the tackles, running 4.8-second 40s. ... The Mustangs, whose late-season loss to Ohio State paved the way for Wisconsin to win the national title, play the Badgers at Madison.
No. 2 Georgia Tech 37, SMU 32
Game Report Posted: May 09, 2010 13:44
Key player: Tech's Jason Clark stops David Miller on a swing pass at the Tech 1-yard line with 20 seconds to go to end SMU's comeback attempt.
The skinny: Clark had 23 tackles for the Jackets, who got two INT returns for TDs and a kickoff return for a score. ... Brian Rogers passes for 364 yards and two TDs for SMU, but those INTs ...
SMU 48, Baylor 10
Game Report Posted: May 10, 2010 22:11
Key player: Brandon Mills catches 10 passes for 97 yards and two scores, keeping drives going while the rushing offense struggles for the second straight game without TB Bobby Martin (concussion).
The skinny: Brian Rogers hits 21 of 33 passes for 210, using Mills and TB David Miller on swing routes against a heavily blitzing Bears defense. ... The Mustangs defense has a second straight good effort after lousy games against Wisconsin and Georgia Tech.
SMU 49, Missouri 0
Game Report Posted: May 11, 2010 21:25
Key player: Offensive line. The front wall gouges out 345 yards' worth of running room for the backs, including 127 yards by Bobby Martin, who is back after pussing out for 2 1/2 games because of a headache. Backup David Miller runs for 109 and third stringer Nathan King gets 97.
The skinny: Oh, yeah, and the defense pitches its second straight shutout. DE Ben Humphrey gets nine tackles, including two sacks for a season total of seven. ... The good teams on SMU's schedule shredded their defense, but the Mustangs are killing the scrub teams, so Coach Nibble doesn't feel like quite so much the jerk for talking up the defense before the season.
