2016 Week 2

In a season opener where expectations were high, it was the defense who ruled the day. In a 56-3 drubbing, the Jaguar defense was nearly impenetrable. Holding the UTSA offense to a mere 41 yards on the ground. Maybe more impressive than the rush D, the performance of the mostly green secondary setting up a no-fly zone in Ladd Peeble. The Jaguar secondary gave up just 141 yards through the air and forced 3 interceptions, while true freshman SS David Woods added a forced fumble. After a first half where both offenses sputtered to a 21-3 score, including Davyn Flenords season opening 99 kick return for a TD, JUCO sophmore SS Dominic Smith opened the 2nd half with a pick six, and the flood gates opened for the South Alabama offense. True freshman QB Andrew Henry put a shaky first half behind him after capping it off with a 41 yard dart to Mark Russell, and led the team on 4 TD drives to finish off the game. The offensive MVP goes to Darrell (Duh-Rell) Smith, who toted the rock 15 times for 98 yards and found paydirt twice, while the whole defensive unit deserves honors for their master class showing. If this game is any indication for what's to come this season, opposing teams could have headaches preparing for this defense.
