Game Report Posted: October 15, 2013 01:41

The Boise St. Broncos won three of the past four MWC championships but bolted for the PAC-16 over the offseason. UNLV wanted to keep them on the schedule and defeated them 14-7 in an ugly season opener. Boise took an early 7-0 lead with a first quarter passing TD from Nick Patti to Keith Keys, but UNLV had the last laugh, with two Troy Hawthorne passing TDs, to Tony McTyer in the 2nd quarter and Reggie Lewis in the 4th. The true story of the day was UNLV's stifling defense that held Boise St. to 263 offensive yards and just 55 yards on 16 carries on the ground, forcing two turnovers.

Troy Hawthorne had a fantastic day, throwing for 318 yards and 5 TD (and just 1 INT), but the defense couldn't hold BYU and the Rebels couldn't get a late field goal to tie.

Rebels knock off Lobos with 4th quarter rally

Game Report Posted: October 17, 2013 01:17

A one yard rushing TD by backup QB Vincent Nelson with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter was enough to lift UNLV past Mountain West foe New Mexico. The Lobos certainly made things interesting, though, as they scored a TD with 1:03 left to cut the UNLV lead to 7 and then fell on the onside kick. An interception on 2nd and long sealed the victory for UNLV, however, and they are now 6-1 and 4-0 in league play. NM is now 2-3 and 0-1 in the Mountain West.

UNLV led by 20 late in the second quarter but WVU chip away here and there, eventually taking single digit leads in the third and fourth quarters. The teams traded scores in the fourth quarter, but an uncharacteristic 3 and out by WVU late in the fourth combined with a mediocre punt and a 31 yard pass from Troy Hawthorne to Reggie Lewis put UNLV in field goal range. True Freshman Brooks Bradley connected on a 31 yarder as time expired to clinch the UNLV victory, 59-56.
