Tulane scored the go-ahead touchdown with 47 seconds left. On their final drive, UTEP drove down to the 14 yard line with 10 seconds left, only for QB Kyle Green to be sacked on 2nd and 10. With the team out of timeouts the clock soon ran out. UTEP entered the 4th quarter ahead 23-10.

Ian McCully comes to UTEP after spending the last three seasons as offensive coordinator at Navy. He brings with him a triple option that mixes the traditional approach with pistol and shotgun formations as well as hurry-up offense. This is his first head coaching job.
UTEP downed in double overtime

Rice converted a 4th-and-16 play to then score a touchdown with 41 seconds left to tie the game at 35. UTEP then drove down the field, leaving K Dylan Kendrick to miss a 47 yard attempt as time expired. Each team scored touchdowns in their first OT possessions. RB Joe Oliver fumbled the ball on the second possession for UTEP and Rice scored to end the game.
