2006 Week 8

The Jekyll & Hyde Falcons dropped another game today in San Diego giving up 456 yards of offense and being outgained for the first time this season. For once, the Falcon offense was equally as ineffective as the porous defensive secondary, going 2-for-10 on third down conversions and averaging under 4 yards per carry. The blocking was the biggest problem, as the Aztec defensive line found themselves in the backfield for much of the game, racking up 5 sacks and 10 tackles for a loss.

This trend became apparent very early on their first drive, when Air Force's first three plays went for a loss of 2, a sack of 8 yards, and another sack of 13 yards. The first play of their second drive was also a sack.

The Falcon defense was equally embarrassing, giving up long pass after long pass. San Diego State's QB #7 averaged 24.4 yards per completion on the day (see videos below).

"We did not execute today," Air Force coach Hemmen said after the game. "We had players in position to make plays, we had solid play calls, but we didn't execute. We didn't block, we didn't tackle, and we sure as hell didn't play in position to defend the deep ball."

Air Force finds themselves falling to 3-3 on the season, and returns home to face the 2-6 BYU Cougars next week.

[video] - At the end of the second half, under max protect, even after committing to the pass having MLB Ben Ryan drop way back to defend the pass, Air Force gets no pressure on the quarterback and somehow still manages to give up a late TD pass, opening the door for the Aztecs to take control in the second half.
