Air Force Rebounds

The Falcons rebounded in a big way after their disappointing loss to Tennessee in their first game, piling up 521 yards of offense on their way to a 41-10 dismantling of conference foe Wyoming. Despite the yardage, it was the defense that lead the charge on Saturday. The game got ugly early when Wyoming's QB #7 threw three interceptions in the first six plays. The second play of the game was a pass intercepted by Air Force's John Rabold (#32). Air Force scored, then on Wyoming's next possession, on the very first play, QB #7 was intercepted by Hunter Altman (also #32), who unfortunately fumbled it away before being brought down. Wyoming took over and on their third play, QB #7 was AGAIN intercepted by John Rabold. With 3:31 left in the first quarter, Air Force players wearing a #32 had intercepted QB #7 3 times.

Wyoming's quarterbacks were hurting all game. After going 4-of-7 for 48 yards, QB #7 was injurred on a sack by Gilberto Perez. QB #16 then joined the massacre, but was injurred on a Hunter Altman sack after going 5-9 for 88 yards and 1 interception. Wyoming's quarterback troubles continued, and by the end of the game, six players had attempted at least one pass.

Air Force's offense, though overshadowed by the impressive defensive display, was still solid and balanced, rushing for 234 yards and passing for 287. The primary cause of concern for coach Hemmen was the turnovers. Carney threw one bad interception under pressure, but Air Force's offense fumbled the ball seven times, fortunately recovering four of them. "We've got to learn to take care of the ball better," coach Hemmen stressed. "When guys drop the ball after the least bit of contact, I could just retch."

Despite the sloppy ball-handling, Air Force notched its first win of the season. The Falcons will play their home opener next week against the New Mexico Lobos.
