Live to play another day
Once again the UAPB defense came out to play, but early on the offense was a no-show. On the opening kickoff linebacker Mackey recovered a fumble in the driving evening rain at Pine Bluff. Lovelady took two sacks, 3 backwards and out, as KTMC would say. But DE Heckle dropped SMU's quarterback twice on their first possession to force a punt. UAPB drove on their next possession but CB Vinson picked a pass near the sideline and ran 74 yards for the TD. UAPB tied it up on a fantastic drive in which AWL showed a lot of poise; the drive was helped by two penalties to SMU. Freshman Brady Jenkins jumped a flat route throw to register his own defensive TD and put UAPB in the lead.
Following an SMU punt, our returner muffed the kick and it was recovered by the Mustangs. Fear not - Frederick intercepts the ball at our 8! But then I got greedy and started throwing when I should have burned off the clock to halftime. Instead, SMU gets the ball back and promptly throws a 54 yard pass that got behind our cover 3 zone. This after ducking under a potential half-ending sack. So the game was tied at halftime.
Second half was all SMU but not by a landslide. Another big return by Vinson, this time on a fumble at SMU's 30, put the Mustangs up for good. The win was sealed by a 46 yard Roland to Daugherty bomb on the playaction pass.
