BAYLOR TAKES OFF IN '09 LIKE A JET
On a day inwhich the Bears offense was so-so, the defense & Tom "The Jet" Johnson picked them up, allowing Baylor to start 2009 with a laugher.
The 5'9/178 pound Sophmore sparkplug Johnson only touched the ball 6 times, but that was enough for him to rack up 226 All-Purpose Yds & 3 TDs, including an amazing 105 Kick return & 70 yd Punt return for scores. The Jet used his blazing speed & quickness today as a returner, runner & receiver. The defense also pitched in, not only holding Tulsa to 7 pts against them, but by outscoring them on the scoreboard with 2 defensive TDs. On back to back plays from scrimmage in the 3rd qtrfor Tulsa, Baylor converted them into turnovers for 6 pts. First, a 69 yd fumble return by All-American LB David Davis and then a 19 yd Int return by reigning Thorpe Award winner, CB Jermaine Hayes.
The offense was efficient, but not their usual explosive self. Racking up 450 yds & scoring 38 pts is very solid, but if you saw the game, you would easily see that the 2009 opener was not as impressive as they were on a weekly basis last year.
Nonetheless, Baylor starts the year with a blowout heading into 2 Big early season games. Next week they travel to TCU, a team that is 2-0 against Baylor during Coach Juggs' tenure and then the Bears follow that up by hosting Maryland in an early season, Top 25 matchup
