BAYLOR MAKES EARLY SEASON STATEMENT
The Baylor Bears had a fantastic season last year, the best in school history actually. But losing in the Big 12 Title game an a shot at a BCS bowl had to leave a bitter & disappointed taste in their mouth. Well their back and better this year, and after a convincing win over #21 Maryland, they have begun the '09 campaign 3-0 and have the rest of the NCAA & Big 12 elite taking notice.
Despite a 4 turnover day, the offense played it's best ball of the season, controlling the clock w/ the run & passing the ball the way Bears' fans have been used to. Guy Wright threw 2 picks today, but countered that with a 300+ yd/4 td performance. Ron Simmons recorded his 1st 100 yd day as well as scoring his 1st TD of the season. And the special teams remained a deadly scoring threat as The Jet added another Punt return TD, giving Baylor 4 special team TD returns thru 3 games.
For the 1st time this year, the defense didn't dominate an opponent. Maryland put up some big yards & points and had Baylor on the ropes when they cut the lead to 31-23 midway thru the 3rd qtr. But with their backs against the wall, the defense responded with a turnover & a 3 and out the next 2 times they took the field, allowing us to salt away the impressive victory.
