Missed PAT costly in loss to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - B-Dawg's lack of stick skillz are legendary, but usually for those actions associated with the term.

You know, things like user catches, user picks, user tackles. Except for the cheap types of user catches that even a trained monkey could make (tapping triangle as the ball is about to be caught anyway), B-Dawg is totally incapable of winning a battle of user skillz.

"Of all the hundreds - yea, thousands - of games I have played, I can only remember one true user pick where I actually moved Prescott Burgess to his right and picked off a slant pass," B-Dawg said. "When you can remember something like that, you know your history of user skillz is pretty thin."

One doesn't typically associate the simple act of kicking an extra point with having good or bad "stick," but B-Dawg has once again proven that nothing can be taken for granted when he's got a controller in his hands.

Dontayo Gage had just made a dramatic 89-yard kickoff return with 6:43 left in the game to pull the Hurons within one point of Bowling Green, just 13 seconds after the Falcons had gone on top on a 2-yard run by Chris Bullock.

Maybe it was because B-Dawg still had a pen in his hand from jotting down notes, maybe it's just because he just plain sucks, but there was utter shock in the generic Bowling Green stadium when Sean Dutcher shanked the potential game-tying extra point wide to the left. Bowling Green added a 47-yard field goal by Sinisa Vrvilo to complete a 30-26 victory on Oct. 4, 2008.

"Who's to say we would have won the game anyway, but I'm literally sick to my stomach right now," B-Dawg said. "I failed my team. I failed them miserably. I feel as badly about this loss as any loss that I can remember, because it was so avoidable."

Adding more sting to the loss was the fact the Hurons (2-3, 1-1 MAC) had a 10-0 lead after one quarter and appeared to be in control of this game.

That lead could have been even larger. Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes fumbled the opening kickoff at the Falcons' 23-yard line. A run to the 2-yard line was negated by a holding call against tight end Josh DeLuc. On the next play, Antonio Smith picked off a pass by Tyler Jones to send the Hurons away empty-handed.

EMU came back on its next drive to go up 7-0 on a 1-yard run by fullback Brandon Downs. An interception by Lorenzo Seaberry set up a 27-yard field goal by Dutcher with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

Another opportunity was squandered when the Hurons had second-and-2 and the 8-yard line, but had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Dutcher to go up 13-3 with 1:24 left in the first half.

Still, the Hurons' defense was playing well and it appeared EMU would take that 10-point cushion into halftime. But, nay-nay, as Corey Partridge caught a 17-yard touchdown pass by Anthony Turner with 36 seconds left in the first half to make it a 13-10 game.

"That was a huge touchdown in terms of momentum," B-Dawg said. "I don't know how momentum is implemented in this year's game. It seems to be there in much better moderation than in last year's game. All I know is they were a different team in the second half."

Outside linebacker Erique Dozier put on a show in the second half for the Falcons, picking off a pass to set up a game-tying 22-yard field goal by Vrvilo, then taking his second interception 25 yards to paydirt to put Bowling Green on top. Dozier also had a team-high nine tackles and two sacks.

"Everyone is focusing on the missed extra point, including myself," B-Dawg said. "But, if you want to see where we really pissed away the game, it was early in the third quarter when Dozier had those two picks."

Jones had three consecutive passes intercepted during that stretch of the game, with Kenny Lewis grabbing the other.

Jones showed some resilience, a necessary attribute for any B-Dawg quarterback, when he capped a touchdown drive with a 2-yard run, tying the game 20-20 with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

B-Dawg hadn't seen a quarterback scramble in a passing situation until the 16th game of this dynasty last week. Turner became the second opposing quarterback to do so, gaining 12 yards on third-and-eight for the key play in a drive that Bullock capped with his 2-yard run with 6:56 remaining.

Gage got two huge blocks on his kick return to squeeze through the wedge and down the right sideline for the first special teams touchdown by a Huron in this dynasty's history. Props go to Chris Larkins and Tyrone Burke for making the two blocks that sprung Gage. It all went for naught on Dutcher's missed extra point, however.

"I had my greatest special teams moment as coach at EMU ruined by my worst special teams moment," B-Dawg said. "You're never on top for very long in this game."

Downs was stuffed for a 2-yard loss on third-and-two at the 50-yard line, forcing EMU to punt. Again, B-Dawg's shaky stick work resulted in a bad kick, a 29-yard punt by Zach Johnson that was returned 21 yards by Partridge for a net of - how many yards, math majors? - eight freakin' yards.

"We might as well have just gone for it on fourth-and-four," B-Dawg said. "You don't expect to be in any worse situation than the opponent taking over at the 20."

Partridge dropped a third-and-six pass, so Bowling Green settled for a field goal by Vrvilo.

Dozier had a sack on third-and-10 on EMU's next drive. Bowling Green then did everything it could to piss away the game itself, choosing to throw a pass that was intercepted by Chris May with 2:24 left. Turner made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Bowling Green 30.

That opportunity was wasted when Jones fumbled on third-and-five while rolling to his left to get a look at an outside receiver who cannot be seen with EA's wretched single camera angle.

Jones finished with four picks, the most by a Huron quarterback in this dynasty.
