Defense scores twice, can't stop Toledo in loss
YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Eastern Michigan's defense seems to have forgotten its main responsibility: Playing defense.
Perhaps the Hurons' defenders have become infatuated with scoring touchdowns, which they did two more times on interception returns by Henry Hawkins and Lyle Garrison against Toledo on Oct. 1, 2008.
While that's all well and good, it would have helped had EMU's defense actually stopped Toledo's offense now and then. The Rockets pretty much moved the ball at will and rolled to a 42-24 victory over the Hurons.
Clint Cochran, who thew eight touchdown passes earlier this season against Purdue, was 22-for-28 for 308 yards, two touchdowns and the two picks which went to the house. He was backed up by the running of DaJuane Collins, who carried the rock 23 times for 112 yards and three touchdowns.
EMU's defense outscored its offense once again. Hawkins, a budding star as a freshman, took a pick 50 yards to the house with 6:36 left in the third quarter to cut Toledo's lead to 21-17. The Rockets broke the game open by scoring the next 21 points before Garrison capped the scoring on a 56-yard interception return with 3:55 left in the game.
For those keeping score, that now gives EMU's defense 13 touchdowns while the offense has only 27 in the first 18 games of this 'nasty. This season, the Hurons (2-4) have 10 offensive touchdowns and four defensive touchdowns in six games.
"This has been a very strange ride indeed," EMU coach B-Dawg said. "I've never seen anything like this. Maybe Madden 2004 played somewhat like this. That's not a comparison I'd be flattered with if I worked for EA, because Madden 2004 was the biggest steaming pile of crap in the Madden series and was a game I gladly put away by December of that year."
The Rockets jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Hurons clawed their way back, getting within 21-17 on Hawkins' interception. Toledo then scored touchdowns on its next three possessions to break it open at 42-17. Garrison's interception return was his second for a touchdown this season and third in his career.
EMU's offense again played like crap. Tyler Jones was 9-for-14 for 85 yards and two picks before getting replaced by Andy Schmitt, who was 6-for-14 for 55 yards. Terrence Blevins again couldn't get it done on the ground, gaining only 55 yards on 13 carries, a 4.2-yard average which is actually outstanding given the paltry numbers he usually puts up.
Toledo (3-3) scored touchdowns on all six of its trips into the red zone.
"I saw a lot of B.S. in this game that I haven't seen in NCAA '08," B-Dawg said. "I saw the first evidence that the dreaded momentum from NCAA '07 is still in the game. Things happened that wouldn't have happened had Toledo not been on a roll, like our guys dropping touchdown passes in the end zone, our complete inability to force an incomplete pass at times. Hopefully, games like this will be the exception."
