Defense improved (too improved?) in upset of Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - Has B-Dawg gone too far?

We need a little more evidence to know for sure, but for now the Eastern Michigan coach will gladly take a 17-6 upset of Ohio on Oct. 25, 2008.

This was the Hurons' first game using sliders that got several bumps in the user's favor. The biggest slider changes were on offense, but EMU's offense still managed only 10 points, with cornerback Lorenzo Seaberry scoring on a 49-yard interception return. The only defensive slider change was bumping user tackling from 40 to 60 percent, but the Hurons (3-5) seemed to be vastly improved in that area, holding Ohio to 3.2 yards a carry.

Ohio might not seem like the greatest program around, but the Bobcats have been the toast of the Mid-American Conference in the brief history of this 'nasty. The Bobcats won the MAC title last year and were off to a 2-0 start in conference play this season. Ohio had won nine straight MAC games and had a 10-1 record against conference rivals, losing 28-27 in overtime to Kent State last season because of a missed extra point.

"I don't know what to make of this win," B-Dawg said. "This might be one of those cases where I'd say, 'Tough win, better luck next time.' We made an awfully huge turnaround from the last two games to this one, especially given the competition. As always, everything will be monitored to keep our team in its proper place."

EMU quarterback Tyler Jones, who entered the game with seven touchdown passes and 35 interceptions in 19 career games, escaped this one without throwing a pick. He didn't throw a touchdown pass either, going 12-for-20 for 97 yards as B-Dawg switched to the West Coast playbook.

The defense was the big story, holding the Bobcats out of the end zone and getting six points of its own on Seaberry's touchdown. The Huron defenders made their presence felt when they held Ohio to a field goal after the Bobcats had first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. After back-to-back tackles for losses, Michael Braunstein came out to open the scoring with a 21-yard chip shot.

"If you believe in momentum, this was a huge turning point in the game," B-Dawg said. "They might very well have rolled us had they scored on that first drive. Then again, my sliders might be so neutered at this point that nobody will ever score a touchdown on us again."

Dwayne Harrison, getting a few plays at fullback when Brandon Downs needed a blow, gave EMU a 7-3 lead on a 2-yard run with 1:09 left in the first half.

The third quarter nearly elapsed without a point being scored, but Seaberry jumped the route on a short pass to the left and went 49 yards with EMU's 14th defensive touchdown in 20 games under B-Dawg.

The Bobcats (4-3) chose to run the ball on third-and-six in the fourth quarter, only to have middle linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw stuff freshman halfback Melvin Thomas for a 4-yard loss. Braunstein came on and nailed a 52-yard field goal to make it a one-possession game at 14-6 with 4:52 remaining.

It was up to EMU's offense to at least hang on to the ball for a while. The Hurons did even more, taking 2:37 off the clock in a nine-play, 39-yard drive that culminated in Sean Dutcher's 47-yard field goal with 2:14 remaining.

On Ohio's final drive, the Hurons' defense again came up big inside the 10-yard line. The Bobcats had first-and-goal at the 7, only to be turned away without a point. Freshman linebacker Henry Hawkins had two sacks and Brandon Jones threw an incompletion on fourth down with 42 seconds to go.

"I think Henry Hawkins has a chance to be a special player for us," B-Dawg said. "K-Shizzle's mang love for him is not misplaced."
