FIU plays UM tough in the Battle of 305

August 29, 2009

Game Report Posted: October 01, 2008 23:24

UM comes into this game ranked 27th in the nation in the preseason polls. A clear favorite vs. their cross town rival. FIU was very hyped for this game and came out with a lot more intensity than UM. It was no surprise that FIU would pass to test UM's young secondary. They proved that the inexperienced UM secondary was vulnerable and a field day in the 1st half.

FIU lead throughout most of the game and went to their running game in the 2nd. That also proved to be a weakness for UM. The DL and LBs was thought to be the strength of UM's defense. FIU rushed for 151 yards on 31 carries. This stat is a bit unfair to UM since FIU's RB ran for a 57yd TD early in the 3rd quarter. If you take away that run FIU would have run for 94yd on 30 carries. That's only a 3.1 clip which is respectable for the defense.

Miami needed a 4th quarter score to win this game vs. a much weaker opponent. UM's defense did play well down the stretch only give up 1 TD over the last 25 minutes of the game. Baby-J had a huge game rushing for 147yds on 30 carries. Though, the backup RBs got all the glory. Coop had a very good game as well rushing for over 10yd/carry and scored. FB- P. Hill scored a TD and rushed for almost 5yd/carry. S. McNeal only had 1 carry for 1 yd but, it was for a TD. UM only attempts 19 passes barely passing for over 100 yards. Thay relied on the run all day and that is something they will not be able to do when facing a better defense. Backup QB J. Harris continues to see playing time sparingly.

UM's passing attack broke out for 328yds which, kept them in the ball game. L. Hankerson had a caree day with 8 catches for 163yds and a TD. UM didn't give up on their running game even though it was very tough to run against OUs front 7. J. James still had 25 carries though he averaged less than 3yds/carry. UM was able to come back from a 24-14 halftime deficit to take a 28-27 lead late in the game. UM's defense played great in the 2nd half but, could not stop OU on their final drive.

A R. Marve INT in the red zone early in the 4th quarter proved to be the difference. He also fumbled the ball twice today and lost one of them. To his defense OU brought the blitz quite often this game and UMs OL wasn't always able to pick it up.

With heavy rain throughout much of the game, UMs offense was still able to exectute pretty well. UM more than doubled UVA in total offense with 450yds. They achieve 28 1st downs to UVAs 11. UM rushes for over 200yds on 50 carries. Though, R. Marve had a poor game. UM had a chance to open up a 14-3 lead late in the 1st quarter when Marve threw a pick on 3rd and Goal from the 5yd line. He also fumbled and lost the ball twice, one of them being in UVA territory. J. Harris would see significant time and play pretty well despite an deep ball INT.

Jimmy Johnson choose to depend on Baby-J throughout most of the 2nd half. He would carry a career high 35 times for 170yds. He also caught 2 passes for 25yds. When Miami's QBs where able to get the passing game going it usually featured TEs. D. Epps caught 3 balls and R. Gordon 1 pass for a 39yd. TD. It may have been R. Marve's first well thrown deep ball this season. This was the first play on offense after a R. Hill INT last in the 3rd quarter and it proved to be game changing.

Miami's secondary forced underneath passes throughout the game. Even with a 16-23 clip from their QBs they only managed 143yds of passing offense. Miami's front seven was able to hold star RB M. Simpson to only 20yds. in the 1st half. He was able to open up some in the 2nd half and scored a TD.

As the headline suggests this game was not nearly as close as the final score indicates.

Miami's offense was very inconsistent today. The OL was unable to protect Marve or Harris. Even when Marve had time he made some bad decisions and throws causing 4 INTs (3 in the 2nd half). UM was able to force 3 TOs of their own in the 1st half to keep them in the game.

With the score 10-10 at the half G. Cooper choose to take the 2nd half kickoff out of the end zone and was layed out causing him to fumble and for FSU to return it for a TD.

FSU would pretty much put the game away mid way in the 4th quarter when Marve threw his 4th INT which, was returned for a TD making the score 31-20.

Miami's defense played very well causing numerous 3 and outs. FSU only gained 100 yards in the air and a total of 191 yards of offense.

Tyrod Taylor of VT suffered a bruised shoulder during his 2nd series and would have to sit out the rest of the game. This really deflated the VT offense as backup J. Beyer could never get the passing attack going. He finished with only 117yds on 10 completions with 3 Ints.

UM continued to do what they have been doing best the 2nd part of the season is running the football. J. James rushed for 136yds. and had his standard 2 TDs.

D. Van Dyke had the game changer midway through the 2nd quarter. VT was driving and had a chance of closing the gap to 14-7 but DvD had a 90yd INT TD return.

Canes run all over theHoosiers in a 38-28 win.

Miami continued their relentless rushing attack with 50 attempts.
Baby-J in his last game at the "U" set a career high with 37 carries for 183yds and 2 TDs. Coop spelled James nicely with 7 carries for 42yds and a TD of his own.

J. Harris who had started the past 6 games finally had a break out game in the air. He completes 14 of 20 pass attempts for 173yds and a TD. R. Marve has only appeared in 1 of the past 4 games and his future with this program is in doubt.

Miami's defense has been susceptible to good passing attacks this season despite have 2 All-American CBs in D. Van Dyke and R. Hill. UM does start 2 freshman at safety who received All-American freshman honors. Miami gave up 334yds in the air and for the 2nd game in a row could not stop screen passes.
