After EMU tied the game at 10 in the fourth quarter, sophomore HB Michael Shaw broke off a pair of big TD runs to ice the game for the Wolverines. The runs both came on option plays, illustrating the effectiveness of newly installed starting QB James Tepper, a freshman rated as the top dual-threat QB recruit this past offseason. Tepper had an impressive debut, completing 11 of 18 passes for 175 yards with 1 interception and rushing 10 times for 15 yards, including Michigan's first TD in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the Wolverine D kept EMU QB Andy Schmitt on the run all day. LB Obi Ezeh and DE Greg Banks led Michigan with 3 sacks apiece.

The Michigan Wolverines used a slightly different formula, but the result was the same: a win over Penn State to push the team to 11-0 and set up a huge showdown in Ann Arbor next week for the Big Ten title.

Michigan alternated Nick Sheridan and Justin Feagin at QB with great success, while the team's leading receiver was the surprising Kevin Koger. The sophomore TE caught 5 passes for 93 yards, including Michigan's only passing TD.

The one constant for the Wolverines all year--their stellar defense--also played a huge role in this win. The Nittany Lions could only manage 116 yards of total offense, with 85 of those coming through the air. Although Michigan lost the turnover battle 3 to 1, they sacked PSU QB Pat Devlin twice and held the home team to a miserable 2 for 10 showing on third downs. Penn State's lone touchdown came on defense--a 40-yard interception return by CB Shelton McCullough.

Wolverines complete undefeated season with 49-21 romp over Buckeyes

Game Report Posted: August 11, 2009 17:57

A year ago, Michigan finished with a losing record and missed a bowl game for the first time in years. Today, they completed one of the most amazing turnarounds in team history.

The Wolverines broke open a close battle with a 21-point third quarter and finished with a 49-21 win over #1 Ohio State. The win capped an undefeated regular season and earned them the outright Big Ten title and, at the very least, a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Offensive stars abounded for the Wolverines. WR Martavious Odoms returned two punts for touchdowns and added a 33-yard touchdown reception. QB Justin Feagin, thrust into a featured role after freshman James Tepper went down, threw three touchdowns and added a team-leading 90 rushing yards. RB Brandon Minor was stifled early, but he helped ice the game with two late rushing scores.

The Michigan defense also figured heavily in the win. Although Buckeye QB Terrelle Pryor accounted for three touchdowns in total, the Wolverines harrassed him into three interceptions and added four sacks, all from DE Greg Banks. Banks' fourth sack was his 21st of the season, breaking the Michigan record of 20 set last year by Tim Jamison.
