Too close to comfort

A beatiful day in Lincoln, Nebraska as the huskers play their second game of the season in beatiful 71 degree weather. The fans were out in full force, knowing that the 1-AA Nicholls State team would be no match for the #19 ranked Cornhuskers. Before the game we had the opportunity to talk with head coach Bill Callahan about his gameplan for today. He told us "We are going to run the ball down their throats today." The game opened with a 3 play drive ending in a Marlon Lucky td run. Next a 3& out for the Colonels and then a surprising 3& out for the huskers. Even more surprising was the touchdown run on a draw play by the Nicholls State running back. After a balanced attack on the next husker drive the huskers were forced to settle for a field goal making the score 10-7 with less than a minute to play in the first quarter. The first quarter would come to an end with the Colonels driving.
The second quarter would start off with a fumble recovery by Cory McKeon, followed by a drive capped off by a Cody Glenn touchdown run making the score 17-7. Next Courtney Grixby would intercept a pass and take it all the way home to give the huskers a 24-7 lead with 2 minutes left in the 1st half.
The next drive by the Colonels would once again be put to an ubrupt halt, and once again by Courtney Grixby, once again on an interception, and once again found Grixby in the endzone. Huskers 31- Colonels 7. Establishing the running game proved to work well for Coach Callahan as after forcing a punt Zac Taylor connected with Terrence Nunn on a long play action pass for another TD. With the score 38-7, the fans started to funnel out of the stadium, and with 20 seconds left in the first half, Zac Bowman would intercept another pass setting up a failed redzone attempt by the huskers and ending the first half.
To start the second half the husker defense forced a 3& out, but Terrence Nunn would fumble the punt and give the Colonels the ball inside the 20 yard line. They would score and make cut into the huskers lead, but the huskers would drive right back down the field and answer with a 48 yard field goal making the score 41-14. A fumble near the end of the third quarter gave Zac Taylor a chance to prove himself through the air. Zac Taylor did not prove himself, but instead through an interception and as Nicholls State ran out the clock to end the third quarter, coach Callahan decided it was time to enter in the 2nd team.
Second team notes:
Fumbled Punt Return by Wide Receiver Todd Peterson
Td run by Nicholls State that nobody decided to stop
Td pass by Nicholls State
Interception by Titus Brothers
Interception by Phillip Dillard
Play action pass from Brian Hildebrand to Maurice Purify with 3 seconds left for a 97 yard TD.
