Temple Makes Upset Bid

Temple would strike first with a 48 yard TD run from Jared Williams; a beautifully run triple option. Temple would stretch their lead as a Jamal Schulters INT would lead to a methodical drive ending in a 3 yard run from Marcellous Grigsby. The 14-0 lead for Temple wouldn't last long, however, as UConn QB Tyler Lorenzen would hit Brad Kanuch for a 62 yard TD on the first play from scrimmage after the Temple score.

Adam DiMichelle would make a mistake on the next drive, throwing the ball directly to SS Robert Vaughn. Luckily, it wouldn't hurt the Owls, as kicker Tony Ciaravino would miss the 34 yard FG. DiMichelle would be intercepted again by Terry Baltimore, but time would run out on UConn and they would be unable to capitalize on that either, making the halftime score 14-7.

UConn would strike quickly again to start the 3rd quarter, as Tyler Lorenzen would hit DJ Hernandez for a 72 yard TD to tie the game at 14. Temple would get the play of the young season on their next drive, as Jason Harper would spin past a safety after catching the pitch, and break the tackle of Baltimore on his way to a 70 yard TD to give the Owls a 21-14 lead. The Huskies would answer with a long drive ending with another Lorenzen to Hernandez TD, and the score would again be tied, this time at 21 going into the 4th quarter.

Temple would drive again, but Jake Brownell would make like the aforementioned Ciaravino and miss a 34 yard FG to keep the game tied. The Huskies would take advantage, with Lorenzen getting his 4th TD pass of the day, this one back to Kanuch, putting UConn back up by a TD. Ciaravino would miss the extra point wide right, surprisingly, keeping the score 27-21. Temple would then get back to work, with Grigsby being the horse and getting the 3 yard TD, putting Temple up 28-27 with 1:10 left. UConn would put together a great drive, getting into field goal range and giving Ciaravino a chance to redeem himself with a 45 yard field goal. That kick would sail well left of the upright, and Temple would run out the clock to seal the 28-27 victory.
