The Heart of a Volunteer.

Tennessee came in ranked #21. LSU was the top tier SEC program at #5. This game had the CBS national broadcast tag on it. LSU was pumped for this game and Tennessee was coming off an emotional Florida win. How would Tennessee respond?

Chris Davis got knocked out on his first pass play of the game with a concussion. So Marlon Bradford came in for a half to replace him in Death Valley. LSU would feast upon Marlon Bradford getting him rattled beyond belief and forcing two interceptions and sacking him four times in a half.

Then it started

LSU 7 Tenn 0

LSU 14 Tenn 0

LSU 21 Tenn 0

Three touchdowns in the first quarter for LSU. Tennessee was quite rattled as well so the second half looked like this:

LSU 28 Tenn 0

LSU 31 Tenn 0

LSU 38 Tenn 0

LSU 38 Tenn 3

Tennessee somehow got Marlon Bradford to drive the Vols down the field and put three points on the board. LSU had rattled off four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown before the Volunteers could blink on offense. This was beyond bad for the Vols, they were getting blown out 38-3 at halftime on national television, and many fans thought it was over.

Coach Batten made a halftime decision to put in QB #17 Patrick Herman for the rest of the game, figuring the experience would do him some good, who can come back from a 35 point deficit? So out came Tennessee with Patrick Herman under center. Herman rolls out to the right and fires a 46 yard touchdown strike to Jamar McNeal on a 4th down and 11. Tennessee is now down 38-10

Tennessee forces another stop on defense and gets the ball back. Sitting at the 20 yard line thanks to a punt inside the endzone. So Herman comes out once again and fires a slant to Shannon Lowe who broke a tackle and took it 80 yards for the touchdown. Suddenly it was Tennessee 17 LSU 38.

So with the third quarter coming to an end LSU decided it was time to quit slacking off. They marched down field and mustered up a field goal. At the start of the fourth quarter it was #5 LSU 41 #21 Tennessee 17.

So Tennessee started with the ball with good field position. Herman had gotten drilled on second down, but Tennessee picked up a first down on a 16 yard pass. So it was 1st and 10 for Tennessee at the LSU 41 yard line. Then Tennessee came out in the shotgun trips and sensing urgency and Herman fired the ball and here is what happened.:

Obviously the fans sensed a little uneasiness as Tennessee was only down 41-24 now and with plenty of time left in the fourth quarter. The fans were a little worried and you heard a collective two words through the crowd.

LSU once again got the ball, and evidently Les Miles is still coaching at LSU because he called three straight passes. All of which the Vols stopped. Tennessee got the ball back around four minutes left in the fourth quarter. They quickly marched down the field and punched it in on an Option run by Patrick Herman. Tennessee was now down 41-31.

Once again, LSU called a bunch of passes and the Vols answered the call and stopped him from getting past the 50 yard line. The Vol offense, who had gotten a spark with Patrick Herman, quickly marched down the field in under a minute and punched in a touchdown by #21 T. McIntosh. Tennessee was now down 38-41 with 2 minutes in the game left.

Not sure why Lester Miles would pass some more instead of running out the clock but he only took 1:30 minutes off the clock and Tennessee got the ball back again. Patrick Herman worked quickly and hit Jeff Day for a first down with under 10 seconds left. Coach Batten then called a run to set up a field goal attempt and to run out some clock. The ball was on the 34 yard line and there was 0:02 left in the game. LSU Death Valley tries to come alive and Woods drilled the field goal.

And we go to Overtime!

Tennessee lost the coin toss and got the ball first. Tennessee effectively uses the ground and scores on a 8 yard touchdown run by Thomas McIntosh. LSU worked quickly and stealth like and struck gold on 2nd down. Tennessee 48 LSU 48.

And we go to Overtime #2!

LSU started with the ball back on offense again and used it's offensive muscle and struck paydirt again on a 25 yard touchdown strike. So Tennessee got the ball again, and wanted to score. Tennessee decided it was best to wear down the LSU defense and they did. Patrick Herman handed off to Thomas McIntosh and McIntosh hit a hole and broke a tackle and scored. Rocky Top started to play, and out comes the offense again! W-T-F! The offense is coming out in the second overtime? And Patrick Herman snapped the ball and there he went........

Right into the History Books Patrick Herman goes!

Herman went on to score the two point conversion untouched! Tennessee wins the game 56-55 in overtime! The CBS cameraman panned the stadium again.

"It is great to know that Patrick Herman will be a shining star QB. This game was a great example of why I believe he will be a great player and just needs to polish his skills even further to get Heisman consideration. Chris will still start the Ole Miss game, he might be a little dazed and confused. He suffered a minor concussion. I credit my team for coming out inspired to play in the second half and not giving up. They showed the heart of a Volunteer tonight." Said a Gatorade soaked Coach Batten.
