Stanford hands Huskies a win

THREE INTERCEPTION RETURNS SPARK UW

Spurred by three interceptions returned for touchdowns, the Huskies won their second Pac-10 game of the season by forcing five turnovers and capitalizing whenever possible. In the process, cornerback Roy Lewis set a team record with a 104-yard return for a touchdown.

The Cardinal were driving down the field and seemingly on their way to the first points of the game in the second quarter when Stanford QB T.C. Ostrander lofted a pass toward a blanketed Evan Moore in the corner of the end zone. Roy Lewis picked it off and returned it for a 7-0 UW lead.

The Huskies appeared they would score on their own two drives later, but Jake Locker threw an interception, then had to make the touchdown-saving tackle Roethlisberger style. The very next play, free safety Jason Wells made an interception of his own and returned it for a 14-0 Washington lead.

Ostrander threw a 6-yard touchdown to get the Cardinal on the scoreboard, but gifted the Huskies yet another interception early in the fourth quarter to put Stanford behind the proverbial 8 ball.

Locker threw a nice touchdown pass to Cody Ellis in the back of the end zone to put the game out of reach with 1:18 to go in the third quarter.

"If we pick up a win next week we'll be back at .500 on the season," said Jim Mora after the game. "Certainly that's a goal we're shooting for at this point."
