Sun Devils open the season at No. 1 in the polls.

Defensive studs like DT Richard Suggs, MLB James Rivers and LE Lance Holley are gone, so freshmen like MLB Shedrick Smith need to step up.

Senior QB Maurice Lowery will again lead the offense along with Dennis Washington, who finished 1 yard short of 1,000 as a freshman, and WR D.J. James.

ASU 13, No. 5 USC 7: Sun Devils avenge only loss of last season, holding 1,000-yard rushing QB Bruce DeAngelis to 10 yards on 18 carries. SC scores with 2:45 left to make it close; CB Jeff Rivero bats down a pass in the left corner of the end zone on the final play to save the victory.

ASU 34, No. 2 Navy 14: Nation's No. 2 rushing team falls, getting one of its TDs on a pick-six. OLB Zack Mills scoops up an option pitch and scores from 35 yards to break the game open at 27-7.

ASU 32, Oregon 7: Soph Drew Perry gets a rare chance to play and responds with 105 rushing yards and a touchdown. Kevin Callahan returns the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score.

ASU 31, No. 3 Michigan 16: Maurice Lowery hits 25 of 33 for 357 yards and four touchdowns to cap ASU's 13-0 season.

The Sun Devils get shut out of the title, however, when No. 2 Wisconsin beats Mississippi in the title game.

Lowery finishes 238 of 351 for 3001 yards with 31 TDs and 13 picks.

Dennis Washington leads in rushing with 160 for 758 and four TDs. Jeff Brown rushes for 616 and 7 TDs; Lowery gets 397 and Daniel Scott 313.

DJ James catches 73 for 1,059 yards and nine TDs. Jamaal Browne catches 51 and Ronald Hamilton 45.

OLB Derrick Rodgers wins Linebacker of the Year with 84 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Freshman MLB Shedrick Smith makes 60 tackles. Jeremy Thompson and Kyle Miller get 9 and 8 sacks, respectively.

Kyle Callahan returns two kicks for scores to win Returner of the Year.
