2016 Season Review

December 31, 2016

Season Report Posted: October 02, 2016 01:12

Record: 10-3
Holiday Bowl Win

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
QB Mark Bray (Fr.) - No surprise here. Bray was a true duel threat weapon, throwing for 2741 yards and rushing for 1061 yards while scoring 37 total TD's. For that, he was named a Freshman All-American and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (finished 5th). The reality is that Bray was everything to the Sun Devils offense, as was evidenced by their struggles when he was knocked out of games.

DEFENSIVE MVP
MLB Zac Moore (Sr.) - It's a tough call between he and junior DE Steve Gaston - who was the only other Sun Devil named 1st Team All-Conference - but Moore's leadership and versatility give him the nod. He was the anchor and unquestioned leader of a woefully inexperienced defense, never missing a down, and excelling in both the run game and in coverage.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
QB Mark Bray (Fr.) - Did we mention Bray finished 5th in Heisman voting as a true freshman? He's good.

Game Report Posted: October 02, 2016 00:21

SAN DIEGO -- QB Mark Bray returned to the field after several recent injuries, and though he wasn't sharp, he made plays when they mattered, including two 4th quarter TD passes to push the Sun Devils past Oklahoma State. The Cowboys had chances to put the game away early thanks to three Arizona State turnovers - all three via Bray miscues - but managed just 1 touchdown on 5 red zone trips.

The Sun Devils close the season at 10-3, their first 10 win season since 2007.

Deja vu for #10 Arizona State, Bray hurt in 35-21 upset loss to rival Arizona

November 26, 2016

Game Report Posted: October 01, 2016 23:45

TUCSON -- If it could go wrong for Arizona State in this game, it did. QB Mark Bray opened things up with a pick-six, but rebounded to give the Sun Devils a 14-7 lead heading into halftime. From there, both he and WR Chris Merrill would leave the game injured, as Arizona 28 second half points - including the final two TD's after a Spencer Jack pick-six tied it - to claim an unexpected victory over their cross-state rival.

The loss is the Sun Devils' second straight, dropping them to 9-3 and costing them the Pac-12 South title due to a head-to-head loss at USC earlier in the year. Bray and Merrill's status for the bowl game has yet to be determined, though there is optimism Bray will be ready within a couple weeks.

EUGENE -- In what has become a trend for Arizona State, QB Mark Bray was knocked out of a game due to injury for the fourth time this season. Even with him, though, the Sun Devils were unable to generate much offense, making a season-low two trips to the red zone.

The loss snaps Arizona State's 6 game winning six, dropping them to 9-2 on the season. They remain one game up on USC in the Pac-12 South.

Bray's 4 TD tosses propel #8 Arizona State to 34-31 win over UCLA

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray continued his impressive freshman season with 4 TD tosses, including a 39 yd strike to Chris Merrill with 2:25 left that ended up being the game winner. The Sun Devils were largely outplayed in the game - being outgained 471 to 381 yards - but forced the only two turnovers of the game. They were the difference, as Bray and the offense were able to capitalize on short field opportunities. Sophomore LB Ben Hill was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after notching 14 tackles, 5 TFL, and 2 sacks in the win.

The victory is the Sun Devil's sixth straight, moving them to 9-1 on the season, two games up on USC in the Pac-12 South with two conference games left. Up next is a trip to undefeated Oregon, followed by a visit to in-state rival Arizona.

The Sun Devils are now 8-1 on the season, matching their victory total from last year. They also are in a great position to repeat as Pac-12 South champs after USC's loss to Stanford, which put the Sun Devils up two games in the standings.

October 29, 2016

Game Report Posted: October 01, 2016 05:33

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray was listed as questionable heading into the game, but played like he was 100% in racking up 458 yards and 4 TD's. 173 of those yards came on the ground, including an electric 96 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter that completely broke the game open. For his performance, Bray was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. The Sun Devils defense was impressive in their own right, holding the Huskies to just 266 yards.

The victory moves Arizona State to 7-1 on the season, and after USC's OT loss to Oregon, they go one game up on the Trojans in the loss column.

#16 Arizona State runs over Utah 41-7, lose Bray to injury

TEMPE -- Arizona State put together their most impressive performance of the season, but it was unfortunately overshadowed when star QB Mark Bray went to the locker room with an apparent elbow injury. The Sun Devils were up 34-7 in the 3rd quarter when Bray was sacked and hurt. There is no word yet on the severity of the injury.

The Sun Devils defense - which has struggled for most of the season - was dominant for the second straight game, holding Utah to just 179 yards and turning them over twice. The victory moves them to 5-1 on the season, still one game behind USC in the Pac-12 South.

FG lifts #14 Arizona State in second OT, Sun Devils survive California 44-41

BERKELEY -- QB Mark Bray did not suit up after suffering an elbow injury last week, but the Sun Devils were able to survive an upset scare thanks to an opportunistic defense that forced three Cal turnovers. Cal forced overtime after running it into the end zone with 0:16 left, but a Zac Moore INT in the second OT allowed Derrick Hill to win it with a 30 yard FG.

Arizona State is now bowl eligible at 6-1 for the second season in a row and remains one game behind USC in the Pac-12 South. Senior MLB Zac Moore was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after posting 9 tackles and forcing two turnovers, including the key INT in the 2nd OT.

TEMPE -- The Sun Devils shrugged off their recent defensive struggles, holding one of the best offenses in the country to one score in five red zone trips and just 7 points. QB Mark Bray was excellent again in the victory, posting 319 total yards and 4 scores.

The win gets Arizona State to 4-1 on the season and keeps them one game back of USC in the Pac-12 South.

#14 Arizona State gives up 35 first half points, falls to #13 USC

September 24, 2016

Game Report Posted: September 30, 2016 05:13

LOS ANGELES -- The Trojans offense was too much for Arizona State to handle, racking up 35 first half points and 516 total yards en route to a blowout victory. The Sun Devils did little to help themselves during the onslaught, turning it over a season high 3 times.

The loss drops Arizona State to 3-1 on the season and could prove a significant obstacle in their attempt to repeat as Pac-12 South champs. They'll need a much better performance to get back on track against a potent Washington State offense.

Bray tosses 3 TD's, #20 Arizona State pulls away from North Texas 45-24

September 10, 2016

Game Report Posted: September 30, 2016 04:56

DENTON -- A late Jamaal Goodwin INT and 337 passing yards from Mark Bray helped Arizona State pull away from North Texas. The Sun Devils struggled to block most of the game -- allowing 4 sacks and forcing Bray from the pocket numerous times -- which kept the Mean Green within 1 score as late as the middle of the 4th quarter. Arizona State would score the final 17 points of the game.

With the victory, the Sun Devils have swept the non-conference portion of their schedule and enter Pac-12 play at 3-0. They start with USC in two weeks, who will undoubtedly want to avenge their blowout loss in Tempe last year.

TEMPE -- Arizona State's rushing attack churned out 254 yards and 5 TD's, helping the Sun Devils turn a tenuous 24-17 halftime lead into a 59-27 rout. QB Mark Bray was fantastic again in the win, collecting 389 total yards and 3 TD's. More importantly, the Sun Devils may have filled the void left by injured WR Brandon Newberry, as junior Bryan Winston stepped up to catch 5 passes for 118 yards and a score.

August 27, 2016

Game Report Posted: September 30, 2016 02:48

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray showed no signs of nerves in his CFB debut, lighting up the Fighting Irish defense for 414 total yards (280 pass, 134 rush) and 5 TD's (3 pass, 2 rush) as the Sun Devils rolled to victory. The two teams traded scores early before a 28 point 2nd quarter pushed Arizona State out in front for good.

Unfortunately, Bray will be without star WR Brandon Newberry for the remainder of the season after the senior suffered a serious shoulder injury in the 3rd quarter.
