2016 Season Review

December 31, 2016

Season Report Posted: October 02, 2016 01:12

Record: 10-3
Holiday Bowl Win

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
QB Mark Bray (Fr.) - No surprise here. Bray was a true duel threat weapon, throwing for 2741 yards and rushing for 1061 yards while scoring 37 total TD's. For that, he was named a Freshman All-American and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (finished 5th). The reality is that Bray was everything to the Sun Devils offense, as was evidenced by their struggles when he was knocked out of games.

DEFENSIVE MVP
MLB Zac Moore (Sr.) - It's a tough call between he and junior DE Steve Gaston - who was the only other Sun Devil named 1st Team All-Conference - but Moore's leadership and versatility give him the nod. He was the anchor and unquestioned leader of a woefully inexperienced defense, never missing a down, and excelling in both the run game and in coverage.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
QB Mark Bray (Fr.) - Did we mention Bray finished 5th in Heisman voting as a true freshman? He's good.

Bray returns, leads #16 Arizona State to late rally past #20 Oklahoma State in Holiday Bowl

SAN DIEGO -- QB Mark Bray returned to the field after several recent injuries, and though he wasn't sharp, he made plays when they mattered, including two 4th quarter TD passes to push the Sun Devils past Oklahoma State. The Cowboys had chances to put the game away early thanks to three Arizona State turnovers - all three via Bray miscues - but managed just 1 touchdown on 5 red zone trips.

The Sun Devils close the season at 10-3, their first 10 win season since 2007.

Deja vu for #10 Arizona State, Bray hurt in 35-21 upset loss to rival Arizona

TUCSON -- If it could go wrong for Arizona State in this game, it did. QB Mark Bray opened things up with a pick-six, but rebounded to give the Sun Devils a 14-7 lead heading into halftime. From there, both he and WR Chris Merrill would leave the game injured, as Arizona 28 second half points - including the final two TD's after a Spencer Jack pick-six tied it - to claim an unexpected victory over their cross-state rival.

The loss is the Sun Devils' second straight, dropping them to 9-3 and costing them the Pac-12 South title due to a head-to-head loss at USC earlier in the year. Bray and Merrill's status for the bowl game has yet to be determined, though there is optimism Bray will be ready within a couple weeks.

Bray injured again, #7 Arizona State falls to #5 Oregon

EUGENE -- In what has become a trend for Arizona State, QB Mark Bray was knocked out of a game due to injury for the fourth time this season. Even with him, though, the Sun Devils were unable to generate much offense, making a season-low two trips to the red zone.

The loss snaps Arizona State's 6 game winning six, dropping them to 9-2 on the season. They remain one game up on USC in the Pac-12 South.

Bray's 4 TD tosses propel #8 Arizona State to 34-31 win over UCLA

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray continued his impressive freshman season with 4 TD tosses, including a 39 yd strike to Chris Merrill with 2:25 left that ended up being the game winner. The Sun Devils were largely outplayed in the game - being outgained 471 to 381 yards - but forced the only two turnovers of the game. They were the difference, as Bray and the offense were able to capitalize on short field opportunities. Sophomore LB Ben Hill was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after notching 14 tackles, 5 TFL, and 2 sacks in the win.

The victory is the Sun Devil's sixth straight, moving them to 9-1 on the season, two games up on USC in the Pac-12 South with two conference games left. Up next is a trip to undefeated Oregon, followed by a visit to in-state rival Arizona.
