2017 Season Review

December 31, 2017

Season Report Posted: October 05, 2016 05:42

Record: 12-2
Pac-12 Champions
Rose Bowl Win

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
QB Mark Bray (So.) - Bray set school records for passing yards and passing TD's in a season, and also led the country in completion percentage, en route to being a near unanimous winner of the Heisman Trophy.

DEFENSIVE MVP
OLB Ben Hill (Jr.) - Several guys stepped up on this much improved defense, but none was as disruptive as Hill. His ability to rush from multiple positions and repeatedly penetrate into the backfield forced defenses to key their protection on him. Even that didn't work, as Hill still racked up 19 TFL's and 7 sacks.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
HB Steve Williams (Fr.) - The only thing better than stealing a big time recruit out of rival Arizona's backyard is watching that recruit blossom into a bona fide superstar. After setting school records for rushing yards and TD's in a season, that's exactly what Williams is.

#4 Arizona State holds on late to defeat #5 Texas 31-28, claims first Rose Bowl victory since 1986

December 31, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 05, 2016 04:35

PASADENA -- Coach Jon Landrum has never been afraid to make aggressive calls and zig when everyone else would zag. That mindset paid off in a big way in claiming Arizona State's first Rose Bowl win since 1986.

Facing 3rd and 6 with about a minute left on the clock - and the Longhorns out of timeouts - Landrum called for a pass instead of playing it safe and running the clock. One Ryan Summers 7 yard completion later, and the Sun Devils were in victory formation, preparing to celebrate a milestone victory.

Heisman winner Mark Bray threw 3 TD's and Doak Walker winner Steve Williams ran for 147 yards and a TD in the victory. Arizona State finishes the season at 12-2, their best mark since 1975.

Bray, #9 Arizona State crush #7 Cal 56-24 in Pac-12 Championship, earn first trip to Rose Bowl since 1996

Game Report Posted: October 05, 2016 03:13

TEMPE -- Arizona State struck a big early blow in this contest, ringing up 21 first quarter points en route to the school's first conference championship since 1996. Mark Bray's 321 total yards and 5 TD's were key in getting the Sun Devil's out front early, and the clutch performance may very well have sown up the Heisman Trophy for him. Credit must also go to the oft-maligned defense, who forced two turnovers and held Cal to just 289 total yards of offense.

In addition to their first conference title since 1996, the Sun Devils will play in their first Rose Bowl since they faced Ohio State that same year. That game ended in a bitter loss, as legendary Sun Devils QB Jake Plummer fell just short at the end. This time around, they'll face #5 Texas. A win would be their first since 1986.

#11 Arizona State clinches Pac-12 South with 59-6 drubbing of rival Arizona

November 25, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 05, 2016 01:37

TEMPE -- Facing a must win game against their bitter rival for the second straight season, the Sun Devils came through this time in dominating fashion. Heisman candidate Mark Bray led the way with 416 total yards and 5 TD's, while senior Bryan Winston caught 10 passes for 162 yards and one score, tying the school record for receptions in a season (87) in the process. Tucson native Steve Williams ran for 152 yards and 2 scores in his first game against the hometown team he spurned.

Arizona State (10-2) clinches the Pac-12 South for the second time in three years and will face #7 California in the conference championship game.

#2 Arizona State turns it over 4 times in 46-34 defeat at Washington

November 18, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 04, 2016 06:03

SEATTLE -- It was an uncharacteristically sloppy day for Mark Bray - a player many believe to be the front runner for the Heisman. Playing in one of the biggest games of his young career, Bray threw three interceptions and lost one fumble, killing any momentum the Sun Devils had built and giving the Huskies multiple short field opportunities to extend their lead.

The loss likely costs the 2nd ranked Sun Devils a shot at getting into the National Championship game. It also makes next week's matchup against rival Arizona a must-win game. Arizona State and USC are currently tied in the loss column, but a win next week would give them the Pac-12 South title and a berth in the Pac-12 Championship game thanks to the Sun Devils head-to-head victory over the Trojans earlier this year.

Arizona State was in the exact same position last year, needing just one win in their last two games to clinch the division. They lost both games...we'll see if they can come through with a key win this time.

Williams breaks record for rushing TD's, #4 Arizona State trounces Oregon State 63-7

November 11, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 04, 2016 05:38

TEMPE -- HB Steve Williams continued his impressive freshman season, rushing for his 18th, 19th and 20th TD's, all of which set new school marks for rushing TD's in a season. QB Mark Bray ran for 3 TD's as well, also adding 391 yards passing and 2 TD tosses while only throwing one incompletion on 26 pass attempts. Bray was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

The Sun Devils are now 9-1 on the season and remain one game up on USC in the Pac-12 South with just two games remaining. They were in the same position last year before dropping their final two games of the season.

#5 Arizona State runs for 6 scores, crushes Utah 49-25

SALT LAKE CITY -- Arizona State got two rushing scores each from Steve Williams, Mike Page, and Mark Bray in a blowout win over Utah. Bray was awarded Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week thanks to 370 total yards and 3 scores. The Sun Devils controlled this one from the outset, going up 49-10 before the Utes scored two garbage time TD's to make it look more competitive than it was.

The Sun Devils are now 8-1 on the season and remain atop the Pac-12 South with only three games remaining.

Bray nearly perfect as #4 Arizona State rolls past #22 USC 56-27 to claim Pac-12 South lead

October 28, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 03, 2016 04:43

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray turned this highly anticipated showdown into a highly surprising beat down, completing 20 of 25 passes for 308 yards and 3 TD and adding another 2 scores on the ground. HB Steve Williams also contributed to the blowout, adding 119 yards rushing and 2 scores. The win itself is not surprising, but given the stakes and the talent level on both sides, there was an expectation that the game would be competitive. Instead, the Sun Devils broke a 14-14 first quarter tie by scoring the next 21 points. By the time USC could put together another strong drive, it was too late.

The Sun Devils - now 7-1 - move past USC for first place in the Pac-12 South. With only one ranked team left on the schedule, they are well positioned to claim their second Pac-12 South title in the last three years.

LOS ANGELES -- QB Mark Bray threw for 323 yards and 4 TD's while adding another 66 yards and 2 TD's on the ground as the Arizona State offense continued its destruction of the Pac-12. They rang up 542 yards of total offense on the day and scored over 40 points for the sixth time this season.

Arizona State is now 6-1 on the season and remains tied with USC atop the Pac-12 South. The two teams meet next week when USC makes the trip to Tempe.

TEMPE -- DT Chad Henry let everyone know the Sun Devils have a defense too, setting a new school record with 5 sacks against the Buffaloes. He also added 13 tackles, 7 for a loss, and forced a fumble en route to being named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week. Arizona State jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the contest thanks to their pass rush and a strong passing day from QB Mark Bray, whose 6 total TD's earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors.

The win is the Sun Devils' 5th of the season and moves them past Colorado in the Pac-12 South. They remain tied with USC with their meeting in Tempe looming.

6th ranked Sun Devils turn it over 5 times in 28-17 loss to #16 Oregon

October 7, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 02, 2016 20:17

EUGENE -- The Sun Devils were their own worst enemy this afternoon, turning it over a season high 5 times in a loss to Oregon. QB Mark Bray was the main culprit, throwing 3 INT's.

With the loss - their first of the season - Arizona State drops into a three way tie in the loss column with USC and Colorado for the Pac-12 South lead. They'll have an opportunity to clear that logjam up a bit when they face Colorado in Tempe next week.

Bray's 387 yards too much for #16 Notre Dame, 13th ranked Sun Devils win 45-31 in South Bend

September 23, 2017

SOUTH BEND -- It was a successful homecoming for Coach Jon Landrum, as the South Bend native led his 13th ranked Arizona State Sun Devils to an impressive victory over host Notre Dame. Mark Bray bounced back from a tough start last week to throw for 387 yards and 4 TD's in the victory, being named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Arizona State moves to 4-0 with the win, earning several impressive victories in the process. Their offense has been especially potent thanks to a more seasoned Mark Bray (13 TD passes) at the helm and the addition of freshman HB Steve Williams (514 Yds, 11 TD).

Bray overcomes sloppy start, leads #18 Arizona State past #13 Stanford 56-44

September 16, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 02, 2016 15:30

TEMPE -- Things couldn't have started much worse for QB Mark Bray and his Sun Devils. Bray struggled with accuracy early, repeatedly missing open receivers, and the defense could not keep Stanford out of the end zone. After two ugly 2nd quarter INT's led to three consecutive Stanford TD's, the Cardinal led 31-17 and appeared ready to break the game open.

The Sun Devils halftime adjustments were on point, though, as their move to the no-huddle was something Stanford did not have an answer for. Specifically, they had no answer for freshman phenom Steve Williams, who kept the Sun Devils in favorable down-and-distance situations and opened things up for Bray in the passing game. Williams ended the game with 144 yards rushing and 4 TD's.

The win moves Arizona State to 3-0 on the season and gives them a huge edge in the Pac-12 race.

Game Report Posted: October 02, 2016 06:12

TEMPE -- Arizona State's offense typically gets most of the attention, but it was the defense who carried the day against San Diego State. CB Tony Jacobs led the way, intercepting one pass and forcing a fumble en route to being named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week. In total, the Sun Devils notched six sacks and forced six turnovers, five of which were interceptions.

Bray's 6 TD's ignite offense, #20 Arizona State rolls past Michigan 63-38 in opener

August 26, 2017

Game Report Posted: October 02, 2016 04:48

TEMPE -- QB Mark Bray picked up where he left off last season, passing for 321 yards and 5 TD's in a game dominated by the Sun Devils offense. He was joined by this year's freshman phenom - HB Steve Williams - who ran for 182 yards and two scores on just 17 carries in his CFB debut.

Michigan led 14-7 after the 1st quarter - the second score coming after a Bray INT - but a 28-3 2nd quarter by Arizona State quickly killed any chances of an upset.
