Season Report Posted: October 13, 2016 04:08

Record: 14-0
Pac-12 Champions
National Champions

----------

OFFENSIVE MVP
QB Mark Bray (Jr.) - In what is likely his final season at Arizona State, Bray cemented himself as perhaps the greatest college football player of all time. The junior set new school records for passing yards, passing TD's, and rushing TD's in a career; and set a new NCAA record for best passer rating in a season with an otherworldly 201.0 QB Rating. He was awarded the Heisman Trophy for the second year in a row - joining Archie Griffin as the only two time Heisman winners - and finished it up by winning the first National Championship in Arizona State history.

CO-DEFENSIVE MVP
DT Chad Henry (Sr.) - The former transfer was a surprise star this year, collecting 21 TFL's, 11 sacks, 2 FF and 2 FR en route to being named 1st Team All-American and winning the Lombardi Award as the country's top defensive linemen.

CO-DEFENSIVE MVP
CB Jason Luke (Sr.) - Luke was to the secondary what Henry was to the defensive line - a guy with no hype and no track record who became an absolute star. The senior intercepted 5 passes, returning 2 for TD's, and was named a 1st Team All-American.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
RT David Smith (So.) - A transfer, Smith took hold of the RT job from Day One and never let go. He and fellow 1st Team All-American Joe Burrell formed a devastating combo on the right side of the line.

Two time Heisman winner Bray comes through with 5 TD's, top ranked Arizona State claims first National Championship with 48-19 defeat of #2 Georgia

December 31, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 13, 2016 03:20

GLENDALE -- Playing just 20 miles from campus, the stage was set for two time Heisman winner Mark Bray to make his final bit of Arizona State history. He did not disappoint, throwing for 402 yards and 4 TD's while adding another score on the ground.

Things started out poorly for the Sun Devils, though, as a couple early turnovers gave the Bulldogs an early 13-0 lead and sent the largely pro-Arizona State crowd into a hushed panic. It would be all Arizona State from there, with Bray lighting up the scoreboard with his arm and the defense holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the 2nd half.

This is Arizona State's first national championship in program history.

Bray throws for 400 yards, #1 Arizona State beats #9 Stanford 52-28 in Pac-12 Championship

Game Report Posted: October 13, 2016 01:42

GLENDALE -- Mark Bray racked up 469 total yards and 4 scores, Steve Williams ran for 138 yards, and the Arizona State offense finished its scorched earth type march through the Pac-12. There were road bumps today, though, as a pair of INT's in the 3rd quarter gave Stanford ample opportunity to take control of this game. They were unable to do so thanks to a withering pass rush led by Chad Henry, who had 6 TFL's and 3 sacks on the day. Those types of big plays repeatedly killed important Stanford drives and allowed the Sun Devils to close it out in the 4th.

With the victory, Arizona State claims their second consecutive Pac-12 title. Last year, the prize was a trip to the Rose Bowl.....this time, it's a trip to the National Championship game where they will face #2 Georgia.

TUCSON -- Mark Bray quickly erased any doubts about his health, throwing for 4 scores and running for 3 more as the top ranked Sun Devils completed their perfect regular season with a resounding win over rival Arizona. HB Mike Page had another great running day, racking up 176 yards as Steve Williams sat out most of the game for precautionary reasons.

Arizona State will face #9 Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship game.

Wesley steps in for injured Bray, clinches Pac-12 South with 45-26 win at Boise State

November 17, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 12, 2016 04:32

BOISE -- If ever this Sun Devils team was vulnerable, it was late in the 1st quarter this evening, with their Heisman Trophy winning QB hobbling off the field with an apparent ankle injury. Tied at 10 a piece, it looked like their national championship hopes might have left with him.

Backup QB Matt Wesley was up to the task, however, throwing for 3 TD's and running for one more while only committing one turnover. While he wasn't quite Mark Bray, the sophomore was good enough to carry the Sun Devils to 28 second half points en route to clinching the Pac-12 South for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Page's 230 all-purpose yards lead #1 Arizona State past Utah 49-23

Game Report Posted: October 12, 2016 04:12

SALT LAKE CITY -- Former freshman All-American Mike Page stepped back into his old HB role after Steve Williams went to the locker room early in the 2nd quarter and didn't miss a beat, adding 112 yards rushing and one score to his usual kick return brilliance. His efforts kick started the offense, helping them go on a three TD run that put them up 28-14. That was soon followed by a J.R. Colbert pick-six, ending any upset hopes the Utes still had.

The Sun Devils are now 10-0 as they head into a pivotal match-up at Boise State. They currently hold a one game lead over the Broncos, but a loss on the blue turf would practically end their chances at reaching the Pac-12 Championship game.

Butler, defense help #1 Arizona State survive sloppy effort in 44-31 win over UCLA

TEMPE -- Arizona State's dream season could have quickly become a nightmare thanks to an unusually sloppy effort leading to a -3 turnover margin and some tense moments in the 2nd half. But despite constantly being put in tough spots, the defense came up big, getting 10 huge third down stops. The bulk of the praise goes to senior DT Keenan Butler, who had 3 TFL's and 2 huge sacks in the second half.

The victory gets Arizona State to 9-0 and keeps them one game up on Boise State in the division.

Top ranked Sun Devils stay perfect with 66-14 beat down of Washington State

October 27, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 12, 2016 00:05

TEMPE -- Mike Page took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD, starting the Sun Devils towards 45 points at halftime and an easy victory over Mike Leach and his Washington State Cougars. Leach's usually potent offense was held to just 208 yards of offense, including negative-15 on the ground, and turned over three times.

With the win, Arizona State moves to 8-0 and is now in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 South thanks to Boise State's upset loss to Washington.

LOS ANGELES -- After a TD pass just 49 seconds into the 2nd quarter gave the Trojans a 17-0 lead and sent a raucous Memorial Coliseum crowd into a frenzy, Mark Bray stepped up and reminded us all why he was the Heisman Trophy winner. Bray led the Sun Devils on a 28-7 run over the next two quarters, finishing with 311 yards and 3 TD's through the air, 2 of which went to star WR Bryant Mosley.

The Sun Devils are now 7-0 on the season, and have defeated four ranked teams on the way. They remain in a tie atop the Pac-12 South with Boise State.

#1 Arizona State forces 6 turnovers, beats down #7 Oregon 77-21

October 13, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 11, 2016 04:43

TEMPE -- Arizona State's vastly improved defense has been largely overshadowed by the brilliance of the offense, but it was hard to overlook today after forcing a season high 6 turnovers. Led by All-American DT Chad Henry (2 sacks, FF, 2 FR), the Sun Devils defense consistently won the line of scrimmage and forced the Ducks into multiple mistakes. QB Mark Bray (5 TD's) and the offense were more than capable of taking advantage of those mistakes, the result being the most points scored in Arizona State football history.

Arizona State moves to 6-0 with the victory and is tied with conference newcomer Boise State atop the Pac-12 South. They'll face a significant challenge next week when they travel to Los Angeles to meet the #11 USC Trojans. The Sun Devils were defeated last time they played in the Coliseum, two years ago, costing them an opportunity to play for the Pac-12 crown. Ranked #1 this time around, the stakes are even higher than that.

CORVALLIS -- Things were competitive early, with the Sun Devils holding a slim 14-10 lead after one quarter, but Oregon State was simply no match over the long haul, losing 38-0 over the remaining three quarters. QB Mark Bray continued making his case for a second straight Heisman with 369 total yards and and 4 scores, while the defense - led by DE Brian Jones' 2 sacks - held their 5th straight opponent to 17 points or less.

The 5-0 Sun Devils return home for a showdown with #7 Oregon, the only other undefeated team in the Pac-12.

2nd half surge pushes #1 Arizona State past #14 Cal 49-16

September 15, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 10, 2016 05:03

BERKELEY -- Arizona State led 14-10 at half, producing perhaps the first real bit of anxiety in a halftime locker room this season. Thanks to Mark Bray's ruthless efficiency and a withering pass rush led by OLB Phil Johnson, that anxiety wouldn't last long as the Sun Devils rolled up 35 points in the 2nd half to win going away.

The defense has been an especially pleasant surprise, as they have not allowed more than 17 points in any game this season. The formula has been constant pressure on the QB and a "bend but don't break" philosophy that has limited the big plays they've allowed in recent years and allowed them to make opportunistic plays. Both elements were on display against Cal, as the defense notched 7 sacks and saw CB J.R. Colbert take an INT 99 yards back for a score.

The victory moves the Sun Devils to 4-0 on the season as they head into their bye weeks. They also have an early advantage in the Pac-12 South thanks to USC's upset loss at home against Oregon.

Bray, #3 Arizona State crush #4 Notre Dame 51-14

September 1, 2018

Game Report Posted: October 09, 2016 05:04

TEMPE -- Arizona State turned this early season marquee meeting into a route early, building a 34-7 halftime lead before cruising to victory. While QB Mark Bray will get much of the attention thanks to his 378 passing yards and 4 total scores, the two biggest developments for the Sun Devils are the emergence of WR Bryant Mosley as a primary receiver (12 catches, 199 yards, TD) and the defense as a formidable unit (220 yards allowed, 1 rush yard allowed). If those trends continue, the Sun Devils may find themselves playing for much more than just a conference title.

Arizona State has now won their third straight against Notre Dame, and their 4th straight against ranked teams.

CHESTNUT HILL -- Mike Page took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD, starting a tidal wave of offense that produced 63 points in just 3 quarters of action. QB Mark Bray had a large hand in that, completing all 18 of his pass attempts for 332 yards and 2 scores, while also running for 89 yards and a score. Not to be outdone, HB Steve Williams ran for 132 yards and 3 scores. In full, the Sun Devils offense put 66 points and 579 yards of total offense on the board.
