Rettig Leads Eagles Past Panthers

Pittsburgh, PA The Boston College Eagles flew into Pittsburgh looking to continue their 5 game winning streak, wanting to become 6-0. Fortunately for the Eagles they brought their quarterback Chase Rettig, weird to say I know.

Rettig has been the most inconsistent piece in the Eagles 3rd ranked offense. For the season he is completing just over 50% of his passes. Sure maybe you can blame coach Spaziani for favoring the running game led by Andre Williams and a stout defense led by Luke Kuechly, thus never giving Rettig to get into a rhythm. But on this day, Chase Rettig would be the only consistent player on the Eagles offense.

Andre Williams, has not had a fumble all season, but when he broke through the defense on a 11 yard carry, and Panther linebacker, sophomore Devin Cook came from behind and punched the ball out of Williams' usually tight grip coach Spaz said "I knew that we were in for a fight."

Although the Panthers were unable to turn the fumble into points, it was great defensive play that kept them in the game.

The game started off great for the Eagles as wideout Bobby Swigert took the opening kick off 102 yards for his first kick off return for a touchdown. But that would be all they could muster against a tough Pitt Panther defense. Pitt finally found some offensive mojo and freshman running back Cedric Burns punched in a 3 yard touchdown to tie the game at the end of the first.

The Panthers defense played the Eagles great running game better then any other team this season. Andre Williams was held to only 47 yards rushing in the first half, including a 22 yard score, but Chase Rettig was able to give the Eagles offense when the rest couldn't. Rettig although only completing 53% of his passes in the first half, a big 64 yard touchdown pass to Johnathan Coleman at the end of the first half to increase their lead to 21-10.

Rettig passed for a season high 255 yards. He also had a couple of big runs to extend drives that were at 3rd and 7, and 3rd and 11. "Chase played a great game for us. He was able to make key throws and also showed his athleticism with some big runs for us," coach Spaziani said.

Next up for the Eagles, they get to go back home and welcome the surprising 4-2 Syracuse Orangemen.
